Don't feel bad, Todd. I would say with great conviction that the quality of your music isn't the only factor to determine your inclusion on the Big 50. I'm not sure what else it is though.

'04 - really? I didn't know it's been that long either. I know of one artist who got on there the day he joined, still isn't prime, and hasn't been here or updated his page beyond the first 2 songs he uploaded. Sorry - I just checked and he did replace one. I like his music a lot so I'm not saying it wasn't deserved, but, well, you know. I actually thought maybe he was someone "big" operating under a pseudonym to get that kind of attention right out of the gate.

Ok - it was Tiger, Tiger. He lives not far from me and I've gotten to know him and he's a really cool guy. So Mark, if you're reading this, I'm just using you as an example!

In fact, I'll plug his podcast again, just to show my support: http://mnlocalsounds.mypodcast.com/

No sour grapes here! Bat Lenny WILL be on the Big 50 someday, guaranteed!

Todd ---I believe if your songs aren't mastered to commercial volume you will not get on the big 50! this is just my opinion!
I'm not going to pass judgement on that---Plus I think the committee that decide have tastes that are more to the rocky /grungy styles---and good looking gals hehe
We are here for the support we get from other like minded Artists
It pays to have a couple of other sites

I have never had a song on the BIG 50, Underground 40 or The Hitline and I have been here since IAC's beginning. I am not complaining though because many things have happened to me BECAUSE of IAC. I have hit #1 on CASHBOX , I have great collabs coming with VERY talented artists and I have made great new friends here that will last me a lifetime. SILVERWOOD; quality has something to do with it, but I have high quality sounding music on my page and artists with lesser quality have been these three charts. Like I said, I am not complaining, I just keep pluggin' away and hopefully one day, one of my songs may make those charts. I know that the BIG 50 gears toward the Pop Rock, Rock, Alternative and Alternative Rock genres, so I am not mad at them for that. That's IAC's niche for their site...

I wouldn't normally say anything about this, but now I will, considering. Yesterday IAC programming finalized their list for the next 3 weeks of Feature Artist of the Day. Both Hop on Pop and Slimdog Productions, coincidentally enough, are on this list. It probably sounds like I'm making that up because it's just too odd that this thread appeared a day later, but if you don't believe me, ask Verity, she will vouch for that because she received a copy of the list. I really didn't want you guys to think this occurred just because you posted something, because that's just not the case.

Re:original post.
Interesting observation Todd,
I have been here since just after the beginning, and I sure as hell haven't been much higher than the top 6000 mate, and thats well outside the 50, but one track I had kind of did reasonably in a genre chart, I dunno, I tend to think that there is an unecessesary competition associated with charts, but some peeps say they love them,
I find that when my stuff has done well, I have liked them, but when I see stuff and it says "position in chart:#14,871" I've thought, if they did away with charts, then I wouldn't feel the bummer?
But peeps make a deal out of numbers, even I remember being proud on the forum posting about "how many tunes", and think that it was probably an egotistic gesture, and maybe not that which I wished to project as an artist,
It's hard to love em without loathing them,
When its good its really good
and when its bad I go to pieces.

If you mean never been in the Big 50 and been here a while, I would be in that camp. Although, is being here since 2005 a long time?

WOW!!! Thanks Toby. How funny!!! I am humbled and honored to say the least!!! I just didn't want it to sound like I am complaining. I just wanted to show people that other things can happen here at IAC, even if you don't get on those above mentioned charts. I have had three interviews going on this week. One with "Makin' It Magazine" out of Atlanta for a spotlight piece for February, 2mental will be on the front of WWS Magazine(covers Hip Hop & skateboarding), on their online page sometime next month, NOBULL will by today have submitted 3 songs to be possibly put on a major mixtape to be distributed in 14 markets in the US and heard around the world and all 3 of us were interviewed yesterday by Hollywood Music TV Canada's music director Tina, and was placed on her podcast, which you can hear on my IAC site. All these things have happened in most part by placing music here at IAC. 2008 has gotten off to a busy start for us and we hope it gets better. Thanks IAC!!!

Data Thief ------This place is addictive!

So Big 50 or not --we are having a great experience---what I didn't say clearly enough was-----commercial remastering makes All the songs of a similar volume---which sounds better to listeners from outside!

We have done well on the genre charts with 3 #1s ---so I love IAC (Most of the time)

In essence The Big 50 is just a station like the 1000s of others on IAC Todd..Just with more exposure..
Like any station,it reflects the tastes of those who compile it..and has certain required dress codes for admittance, 'specially in terms of sound/production quality/attitude from what i hear there..

If you or me or Stegor-or anyone else made it,it would look very different..and relect the qualities each of us as individuals values in music..

I've heard songs here that imho are up there with the best tracks i've ever heard-and they're on like 3 stations or something-and never been anywhere near the Big 50.....

So,what i'm saying i guess ,is i hope your not taking the fact you havn't got in as some indicator of lack-of-quality or anything,'cos it simply not true imo..

For every Big 50 compiler who dosn't consider a track you've done worthy of inclusion, there's another person here who'll love it and add it to their station..

And their opinion is just as valuable surely..

You know, it's perfectly alright to mention me by name, Mr. I.S.O.N Incorporated.... as soon as you use a phrase like "the best tracks I've ever heard" the entire IAC community knows exactly who you're referring to, anyway.

Love always,

Wow that is odd. I did see the new list of 'Frontpagers' a couple of days ago (I'm responsible for passing on the glad tidings to featured artists haha) and as Toby said those two names were on it. I think this is a great honour because it's not just about ONE song but about the whole package.

Occasionally a 'one hit wonder' will find it's way into the Top 50 in the interests of balance maybe or some striking originality. Sometimes there are artists who can do no wrong - they just instant and lasting appeal. I guess you could say that a little luck is involved it would be naive to think otherwise - You all see how many good songs there are here and personally I feel quite sad that you all can't get this extra Kudos you seem to attach to these lists.

So my advice is write to please yourself, to please your peers, your fans, your family and be happy that you are noticed and appreciated at IAC whether or not you reach the Holy Hitline or the Fabulous 50. Hope I haven't said too much here. I've been a non-performing IACer for a short while only so I have no axe to grind (musically or otherwise). I see life from both sides of the coin so I guess I'm in a good position to comment - Cheers Vee

Toby -- Thank you so much for the inclusion in the "Featured Artist" club! It is very much appreciated. Especially since I respect the artists here as much as any artists anywhere. Seriously.

I too write only for myself and my friends and my family (my son is reading this over my shoulder as I type). I am just a dad and 9-5er who loves music and has been lucky enough to release a record.

I appreciate everybody who has given me a listen and who has bought a disc. To be included in this wonderfrul group of musicians in an honor and is truly humbling, as well.

So, once again, thank you for the feature. And to everybody... thank you so much just for listening. This is the best music site I have ever been a part of and, for sure, the best I've ever seen.

The best thing is, I discover new stuff every day... it never ends.

Rock.

Todd

I two have seen that on the Top 50 or hitline etc there is a derth of country songs. Mostly the charts are geared towards alternative, pop , grunge and hip hop. Out of the list I see a smattering of country songs.
I may be wrong, but I haven't seen many "country" artists of the day either.

Like Slim, I had a two time # 1 on the IAC country charts last Dec and into this past January and another # 1 recently. Also have had a #1 on Cashbox Top Indie Country and # 1 on Cashbox Top Ten Country Picks, so I should't complain. However a level playing feild would be nicer.

I am happy that I joined IAC, I'm proud to display the icon on my other sites and I'm enjoying the comeraderie of my peers.

Actually we've only had the feature artist of the day a short time and have featured Michelle Rene, Maggie Austin, Sumner Bros, Gina Villalobos and John Neilson who all do either all country or some country music. Those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

I sort of wish people wouldn't start this kind of thread that comes up occasionally because it inevitably turns into an 'I didn't get featured either' party.

Like I said earlier Toby, it REALLY doesn't bother me that I am not on these highly seen charts. I just tried to explain to some that other good things happen as well as being "featured" or being on the frontpage charts here. Maybe my post above was taken wrongly and I apologize if I didn't explain clearly enough. I understand the the niche of IAC with the BIG 50 and the departments here will choose what moves them in whatever way. That is how it is in the music industry and all music sites have their own niche for what defines them as a site. But, I say once again I am honoured that I have been chosen to be a featured artist here in the next 3 weeks. I always say, "Make Your Own Path"...

Definitely wasn't directed at you, Slimdog, you got a rocking attitude about your music and the site. That was just sort of an arbitrary comment about topics like this, not meant at anybody in particular. Just sayin, the thing is if we featured everybody even the featured ones wouldn't really be featured, cause everybody's featured. :D

I haven't been featured and may not ever get featured. That doesn't matter to me . I will continue to write music that I care about. I've been in this game too long to worry about being in the Top 50, would be an honor, but I'm not gonna lose sleep over it.
And as I said before, I'm a proud member of IAC and proudly display the icon on my other sites.

Susan has had "Making Mischief" in the Big 50, and that's a sort of honorary Country song even though it's in the World genre :)

And "I Think of You" was also included in the Big 50 - and that's in no way a rock/pop/guitar-led song, not typical at all. So that shows me that the producers of the Big 50 have a broader range of tastes that they are generally given credit for!

Without wishing to offend anyone, if you all really feel that it's important to get your work into the Big 50, then my advice is to take a listen to the quality of finished music that the producers of that chart tend to favour - and then produce a piece of your own that equals or betters the songs that are in that chart. And I mean "equals or betters" in terms of songwriting, performance, production, mastering, the lot! It's got to be downright obvious by now that if your work is lacking in any of these departments then it is not going to be included.

Just to add to Satch's statement...there are some different genres that do hit the BIG 50. I kinda forgot about "Dip" by BAKUKU, who I know from different sites, hit the BIG 50 with a Hip Hop song...which by the way was pretty hot if you ask me. Right now, "Can Anybody Hear Me", by The Kottonmouth Kings is a Hip Hop/Rock infused song in the BIG 50.

Again, I feel like I have to apologize for this thread.
I was not complaining, and did not mean for it to sound like I was.
I also did not intend for this to become a bitching session. Just spoke my mind and did not anticipate the snowballing effect it would have.

Again... whether I am "featured" or not . Whether I make the charts or not, this is the best music site I have been to.

Thanks.

Long Thread! I read bits and pieces.. as for the the top 50, Underground 40, Hitline,....It has crossed my mind because I have not cracked that nut! :) There is a definite, edge, vibe, feel to those lists...and it is subjective. I am ok with it....I will not write to get on a chart. Good Luck to all! :)

Ya know what Jeff - you're right about that. I stated earlier that Bat Lenny WILL be on the Big 50 someday. I was trying a bit of positivism. But when I think about it, maybe it just doesn't make that much sense. The Big 50 is kind of the equivalent of Indie hit singles. We're not a hit single band. I don't even listen to the Big 50 - why would I aspire to be on it?

Check this site out, Peruse the years and the top songs. It will put in perspective how important lists are in the scheme of music. I often read how bad music is today because what is popular. You will see it has always been that way! In 65 and 66 the Beatles only show up far down the top 100....that is a Joke!

Take time to peruse year by year.. there are sample songs per year, as well as a full list of top songs per year. .......Don't worry about Charts or lists...make the best music you can.

Jeff
