Operation Homecoming - pipeline regulars, please read..
I had this idea about trying to bring back some of the artists who were at IAC back in the day, 2006, 2007. We've now set it up so emails notify the artists when they're added to a station so the idea goes like this: Start a station (or use one of your current ones) and go add any artists you can think of that you'd like to see come back around. They will get a notice and perhaps come check out the site again.
What do you think, good idea or stupid one?

Good idea.
Although the artists should be able to opt out if the notifications, because too many could get annoying.

This seems an old thread... I hope I won't be admonished for answering it...
Well no, I don't think this is a stupid idea...
but I think the way you went with me was actually best.
You wrote to me, you found me, and you wrote to me,
and invited me back. That's the long and short of it.
It was the personal touch. You told me how cool this site is,
and I went and looked again, and found you were totally correct.
This Place Rocks.
Now, if you didn't want to have to individually write to ALL the artists who
were here that you want back, but still want 'em back....
You could perhaps create a template,
a basic 'cover letter'...
"Hi,
you've received this, because frankly, we miss you.
We were IAC and now we're IMP, which just means,
We're Back, Only COOLER....
We are writing to you, because you're a artist of note,
as sure enough we have noted, and so, we invite you
to come back to IMP (formerly IAC) because you are the coolest,
and we are the coolest, so it's a natural fit.
Be Part Of The Indie Music Revolution. Join The Music Caravan.
Sincerely, Indie Music People dot com."
Something like that?
The idea of simply adding them to stations,
well it's not stupid, stupid would be 'fill a tray with water for ice cubes,
in case some of these artists drop by the house', because if they
weren't invited to your house, you'd have to ask what they're doing there.
And you wouldn't think of something THAT stupid. I might, but I'm learning.
It's a bit around the corner though... and the artists may not
even remember what it's about.
Your approach with me, worked.
I don't know if it's 'cause you'd heard of me before or remembered me or
whatever it was... but you actually wrote to me and invited me here,
and in my case, that saved my life 'cause when SoundClick turned dick,
forget it... you have no idea.
But you could create a basic Come On Back To The Fold, email,
which you could send to prospective new artists (or old artists returned
to their original upright position for take-off and landing)...
you know what I mean, yes?
Writing to them works. And you could create a cover letter
so you don't have to do the same thing a million times.
Well hitting a send button a million times is easier than writing
the more or less same letter a million times. I know, I talk too much.
I think it's 'cause I'm mostly a girl. I don't know.

Well we did send those letters out to all. However our emailing systems have not been too good, I don't really trust it. I would love nothing more than to have a reliable email system for this site, if anybody knows somebody who understands this sort of thing, please send em my way.
What I was sort of getting to with this post though is the word of mouth aspect. I'd really like all who love this site to contact every artist they know and like and send em our way. We used to have a pretty active word-of-mouth thing going but it hasn't kicked in yet for IMP.

Hmmm.
Well one of the general banes of my existence now, happens to be email.
Specifically, Yahoo.
Yahoo used to be pretty much for email. Maybe it was a search engine too.
Then Yahoo decided it wants to be a Television Station as well,
so all of a sudden the email started working really poorly, very slow,
sometimes hardly at all.
I've been advised many times by many people, to change email outfits.
Thing is, my wife (my late wife, Vanessa) started these email accounts.
So I won't quit 'em. I keep putting up with the slow performance.
To advise you which email system is better, honestly, I don't know.
So my advise there wouldn't have much to it.
I am however good with creative wording, so if you needed help
constructing a rockin' cover letter, I'd be more than happy to help
you with that, write to me and let me know the particular elements
of information in there, and I'll try to make a flowing cover letter out of it.
It can even go back and forth a few times if you wanna tweak said letter...
till you've arrived at something you like.
In general, the word of mouth thing, I find, comes from not
encouraging word of mouth.... (for some reason, I almost suspect
trying to encourage word of mouth, makes it less likely to happen,
because then people feel on the spot) .... but from the place just
getting Cooler and Cooler and More Excellent, All The Time.
And to do that, of course, you have to have ideas.
I make myself available to you Sir, 24/7, just email me, you have
the address, to 'bounce' ideas off of.
Resources are of course limited, and some ideas won't be immediately doable.
But ideas can and should be explored.
The better this place is, the more people are going to talk about it,
and the quickest way to that road, is the cooler it is for the artists,
and the easier it is for them to promote themselves, and the cooler
they look doing it because of how cool this place gets more of all the time,
well then they tell everybody about the cool site where they're rockin' the house.
You see my thinking? You make it so, there's more to tell about themselves,
and in the process, the information of this cool place where they are,
also gets out.
A well worded cover letter, sent through an email system that functions,
would also be good.
