an idea about how to bring non-artists listeners to IMP.

This is something I created back in the IAC days. I just updated it today to reflect IMP. The idea was to get a short cable TV ad up in many locations. I saw this as a silent ad, wonder if it would be effective?

Course it would cost money to do that.

indiemusicpeople.com ~ The best music you've never heard

Add Comment

3/7/2016 7:24:00 AM ---- Updated 3/7/2016 7:42:34 AM

Well, you thought this up, heh? Pretty darn good.

Visually, it's spot on.

I don't hear it as silent however.

Would you like to know how I do hear it?

Okay... for the first parts, (which is to say, for all the frames where there
is text speaking not saying "indiemusicpeople.com")

I hear, well a few elements, there's a voiceover announcer speaking
the words written here, I'm hearing Martin Sheen, but he's
probably too expensive, so I could work something up...

musically or as back ground backdrop to the voiceover guy,
sound element background to the voice,
this low pitched steady drone...
like a cello section... just on one note....
hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....
and with each new text frame (there are 3 of them I note,
and this 'ad spot' clocks in somewhere between fifteen and twenty seconds...
I'm not sure if they do a twenty second spot, since it seems just a tad
more than fifteen seconds, yes I timed it best I could without a stop watch
and it is first thing in the morning, my favorite thing to do, let's time
something, and use the clock on the computer as the stop watch, I'm game)
the hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm kicks up a half step or more,
in pitch... probably a half step. Like E to F kind of thing.

Now, this is very effective, the black and white,
and the solemn low drone cello section note, raising half step
with each new text frame...

once it hits 'indiemusicpeople.com'... it needs to break
out of the drone,

and there's a particular song, I hear,
it's called "Indie Music People.com" by The BEATLES.

And as I have two of them, BEATLESEX can actually do this.
Sucks to be me, except for this, this is admittedly cool.

Oh okay there's minor technicalities, mere details really,

"but such a song does not exist yet?"
When the hell did that ever stop me?

Oh by the way, who was it, Richard?
The Best Music You've Never Heard.

That is Perfect.

In fact, it can work into this spot...

you see, how I'm picturing it....

just to have described the whole thing...

okay, by the time it hits the frame saying indiemusicpeople.com
and The BEATLES are suddenly singing a song with those words in it,
sounding marvelous of course,

okay, at that point, the letters,
of 'indiemusicpeople.com' just as you have them here,
with the light flash traveling from left to right like it is?
After it does that... the letters all go to a 'critical mass' brightness,
which in effect turns the whole screen to blank white....

And then, in rainbow letters, coinciding with the place
in the song where it says 'the best music you've never heard'
.... comes the printed text, (that isn't here yet)

that says 'the best music you've never heard.'

and I'm thinking format-wise, since 'indiemusicpeople.com'
is in fact in lowercase, and it looks great, humble, unassuming,
and quietly great... well you have that last frame of text
on the white back ground in rainbow letters

and come to think of it,

the rainbow letters could, letter by letter,
spell itself out left to write, just like the light flash goes,
until the whole thing
'the best music you've never heard' is displayed in rainbow letters....

and then, as it hits the repeats (as the song does in the end,
you don't know this, because only I'm hearing it presently,
but not to worry, that'll change once we fish it out into this realm, like we do)
saying 'the best music you've never heard',

then, the rainbow lettering turns to black.

So now it's black on white,

opposite of how it started, white on black.

(an alternate version would be have it be sunny happy people
in cartoon form at the park once it starts with The BEATLES,
or BEATLESEX same bloody difference essentially that's the point
in the first place you know, and yeah it's you picture it do you?-
it's like right out of Yellow Submarine, the film, looking like Pepperland,
but Lesley's idea is probably better and more commercial
so we'll shut up now, okay I'll shut up now said John exposing
himself to a crowd of horrified onlookers, George you happy yet? Good.)

Well anyway, this does tell me already, like getting straight to the point, don't I.

What our next record will be.

And we've basically got to make a perfect hit record,
which essentially is the coolest commercial ever.
And it's still a record you wanna listen to.
So I gotta pull out the stops on this, Boys, We Need To Be
Absolutely Brilliant, Nothing Short Of It, Do You Hear Mother?

They nod. They hear. Good. Let's see what we can do.

Once it's done, you, Scott,
can assemble the animation of the thing,
now with the soundtrack....

and then post it here,

as a video, instead of a gif which I believe this probably is,
a rather advanced gif at that....

then all we gotta do is come up with an absolutely impossible,
well I shouldn't call it that, an obviously improbable amount of money.

But having the completed commercial, will help.
If we do this just so, it may move mountains.

Mental note.
We not only have to make this insanely perfect record
which is also a commercial, much as it's a commercial
which is also a record, we also have to create
the soundtrack, for the commercial, as I've described it,
with me coming up with the right voiceover tone,
to nail that, and put THAT out as well,
"Indie Music People Commercial" we'll call that,

since the song will be
"indiemusicpeople.com" lower case as well, like the logo there.

So with the extended bits, I picture this spot coming it
at a neat 30 seconds. And they definitely do sell 30 second spots.
Just don't buy one on the Super Bowl, 'cause you wouldn't believe
how expensive they are there.

Here's another thought too... don't pick obscure cable channels
nobody watches... see what MSNBC wants for a spot
in Primetime, say, during the Rachel Maddow Show,
she's the pinnacle.. it's usually stupid pharmy drug commercials...

even one spot would be a fortune, probably,
but it should be looked into.

at any rate,
putting together the commercial as I've described it,
and putting it on youtube,
gives us, a postable, embeddable, perfect commercial,
with sound, and the awesomeness of the boys singing
the name of the place, which then can be posted, oh lots of places....

the idea is, we put this thing together soooo cool, soooo spiffy,
it transfixes people, they watch it over and over and they
don't know why, they just watch it, over and over....

so a lot of that's on us, because we need to get this record perfect.
And I have to run out to get guitar strings as well. Busy day ahead of me.
This may take a few days, I'm not rushing a record like this.
It has to be impossible, yet right there staring back at you. Like, 'yeah, what?'

yeah I like Richard's slogan too, maybe that could be the last frame of the ad.

I believe the cable companies offer a discount package that place an ad on a bunch of different stations at odd hours.

Maybe have a song break out at the mention of the site name.

I like Richard's slogan a lot actually. I like the idea of and add on cable but the more popular the channel is and the more popular the time slot is the more expensive it becomes.

Also in your add you kind of slam on the majors by hinting that the majors somehow hide talent. In fact the majors have break many artist by supplying backing to allow the artists to perform at a scale they could not without support. I know it is supposed to add drama but do we really want to take issue with the majors I don't.

So I think there is a couple of things. Would the channel that we could afford to run the commercial on hit enough of an audience? Will a silent black and white add catch the attention of today's music fans? Is the content of the add the correct content? These are things that need to be considered before investing money in something that may or may not have a return.

I don't have any knowledge of advertising statistics but I think we need to do our homework and if we are going to invest in adds choose the ones that are cost effective and raise awareness we need to seek out the best possible method. Is that method direct mail marketing? Is that method air time on radio stations that play the major labels rock? is that method billboards in major cities in the US? Is that method a cable tv add? I don't know the answer but I suggest we find out.

Well this kind of thing isn't really done for indie sites, even in the case of soundcloud or the old My Space so I don't think good answers are out there.

As for taking on the majors, the fact is that they don't even seek new talent any more. They're really the cause for the lack of inspired music on the pop charts.

I don't think you can throw money at this till you have a better plan.

For instance. What do the non musicians get when they join? Can they post here with unlimited posts? I seem to remember a listener saying she had used up her posts for the day?

I know they can start stations but can they just post music from here on their page?

Do they get a welcome email explaining what they can and cannot do?

Ok Scott and ALJ if the majors don't seek new artists any more then how are new bands making it to the majors? The majors certainly are not seeking submissions from anyone. The majors they choose who they want to back because they have the power to do so. If the majors added no new artist there would be no new albums and there are new albums released and there are new bands all the time.

My point was that yes Indy is separate from the majors but I don't see the point in poking the bear that will bite your head off. I think the add could be just as effective with out taking a hit at the majors. Is there anyone that only listens to only indy and not any majors? That is not true of even artists here.

I think Neil would say advertising is tricky business and we don't want something in our add that will alienate any part of any audience.

its good, yes, but lets get a player that works properly on mobiles and one we can post to facebook other places , I cant use the player from IMP to promote my music, frankly it sucks elsewhere, and compare to others , it just dont cut it, yes it looks good here , but it does not work well and look as good as others, lets not go off half cocked without properly thinking this through and put the cart before the horse, all the latest posts by Scott have been great, but we need to get the place prepared first

First impressions are deepest and mostly lasting, and that is what hooks people, lets be careful, be pragmatic and think clearly about what the end game is, we need to have a product that attracts people, and makes it worthwhile for them to hang around

it is one thing to say we got it all here, the proof is in the pudding and the actualization of it requires planning, short term long term. so nothing reactionary is ever successful , so think through write down goals and objectives, what are the priorities and how do we achieve them and get there.

One only look at the success of Trump to know that sometimes abrasiveness sells. I don't think the labels themselves would be offended. More likely they'd laugh and say "look at the lowly indies taking shots at us".

The purpose of the ad would be to hook someone and pull them in, we wouldn't be operating from a standpoint of trying to do an ad that achieved a low-negativity rating.

New bands do get signed but they are chosen from a very limited pool of artists who have sales accomplishments or who make stunning visual impact. Good songwriters generally aren't going to cut it.

Bryon, I find the player to be very responsive on facebook. What I do is play the song and then copy the play link from the address bar on top of the Player. If you post it, it says IMP player. It may not be as fancy looking as the soundcloud gizmo but I think it starts playing faster and smoother and on top of that you can stream songs in hi-fi if the artist uses a hi-fi file.

Well thank the maker I agree with everything you said in your last post Scott.

I like the idea I truly do. I doubt what was said in the add would ruffle any "major" feathers and if it does maybe that is even better.

My suggestions are ways in which I think we might think about things and employ the biggest bang for our buck as they say.

Since we are talking about an add venture I would like it to be the most successful possible hence my suggestions.

Well, Ken.

Neil doesn't go about speaking for you,
and perhaps you should not go about speaking for him.

Sooner or later Neil will stop in and say what he thinks about it.

And as for me,
here is my take on it.

You timidly or cautiously, or whatever it is, adopting some form
of meek subservience, say 'don't poke the bear'.

I'll address that first, then the question of 'what new artists they present'...
because that's its own pile of questionable...

as for 'don't poke the bear'.
Bite our head off? Let them try.
Anything public can be used to our advantage as exposure for free.

TO Hell, with the bear.

The Emperor, is naked, and fat and homely too, People.

(so to speak, if you know your fables)

Look, The Bear, also known as 'the Mainstream Music Industry',
crams crap down our throats... and yeah, here comes the
other issue I promised to cover....

Do they launch new 'artists'?
Sure they do, but they're a different kind of artists,
which I call 'fartists'.

It's not completely all that...

They have one... Elle King...
she's got a song 'Exes and Ohs",

which reminds me of an American Lesley Jane record...
"Exes And Ohs" by Elle King

Now that, IS good. But she's one artist,
out of a sky full of utter mediocrity, at best, and utter crap, at worst.

Here's a hint: You don't ever get Permission, to Be The BEST.
You Take The Crown, You Put It ON Your Head, You Stand There. Owning It.

We'll Get There, OUR Way.

Well Scott, i should have said, it is not a sexy thing, but does work well, works fine here, for some reason does not show the same on facebook,. but will give it a shot again, many times tried it, and certainly have more success with RN and soundclouds, not that I should mention them, but do and have and shall,.

I think the presentation entry portal needs a look at, as most sites have a welcome page rather then a splash of the site right off the bat, unless you are going to your own site, or logging in.

anyways, it is better then what I can design or do, I know basics, and a lot about meta tags keywords description and that means a lot, worked for me for years bringing a lot of traffic to my sites, unique visits and clients although these days, I have not stayed on top of that stuff since I am scaling down my operations

Well, to begin with, I think Scott’s short cable TV ad is pretty good, although I think what’s still broken on the site needs to be fixed and further steps and measures taken to improve both the public face of the site as well as the “inside” front page before spending effort and money on advertising to promote the site.

For any number of reasons, potential new members are obviously not beating a path to our door, and as for listeners, I would be hard pressed to believe the site is on many radar screens.

I made a point of saying several topics ago on the Pipeline that the current front page is the wrong face to be presenting to the public, a point that Bryon has since repeated on several occasions on subsequent topics and again here.

Continuing to see the site though through rose-coloured glasses is no guarantee that the results will benefit the site and hence the membership.

Besides, if you don’t mind me saying, and I suspect some might, I’m not convinced that we as artists make the best advertising managers or even the best site designers for that matter. It’s a matter of objectivity versus subjectivity as well as having the benefit of professional experience. Yes, I understand that takes money, but before the money it requires the agreement and the will.

Why would we begin to advertise the site until we are assured that we are putting out best foot and face forward? One only ever gets one chance to make a first good impression.

I realize at times I might be the voice that not everyone wants to hear, but I haven’t always been wrong. Not saying.

Neil

Well, first, We Love You Larree. Your outspokeness continues
to be a welcome refreshment, as far as we're concerned,
and that's from all of us here, Lesley, George, and John as well.

You'd be a pisser to party with if we still did that.
I'll party though when I'm dead, and these two of course already are,

so all that'll have to wait.
You do raise a point though, about maybe we need to stop
pandering to all people since so many of them are swill consuming lemmings.

Here's a thought,
there are some folks out there, who are still, incredibly,
into vinyl. Any web site or forum dealing with that, could be
a place to tell people about us here. Because these are people
who will appreciate good music. Which mainstream, by, large, and fancy,
tends not to.

Now, I keep hearing you, Neil,
speak of an 'improved front page'...

I wonder if you have specifics.
And if you'd care to go into detail,
probably it would be worth launching your own
Pipeline thread to do so.
For that, is almost it's own thread of topic right there....
the 'what to be done' of considering a spruce up
of the front page. Personally, I don't really see a bloody thing wrong with it.

I can sort of come around to 'going along with' at any rate,
the concept, that some conversation on the Pipeline,
is adult oriented (Larree alone can see to that, and it's his right,
he's an adult who is known to be outspoken, which is exactly
what we love about the guy) and therefor arguably,
we could include a 'gate page' to the effect of,
"Welcome To The Pipeline. Adult Conversation Happening Possibly
Right This Minute. Click here to affirm you are old enough to participate,
and then log in to gain access."

... something to that effect.

But if we're to talk about improving things, this way, that way,
whatever way, at some point, we need to begin zoning
in on specifics. Thank you.

Let me say something important, vitally important, and Larree, i was in a business that had key people. we even had special insurance on us in case of death, so that we could head hunt and replace the person in case of death, now, of course this is something I will bring up this way, we have to understand the process of how businesses work and base our model on that, here is where I am going now its only conjecture of course.

Now because we are nowhere close to being ready to engage the general public or listeners at this time, this to me , IMP is almost a clique a club and cult, no good that way and it needs to change , ok here I go,

In the businesses I was in, we had procedures in place that had job descriptions, if someone leaves, or dies , whatever, a manual was a part of each persons or should i say, an operation manual for that specific job, a manual to know how to operate this place and the steps required and or for each job involved.

now there are some of volunteers here of course, each has a specific duty, what needs to be done is write out the duties that are involved. or not, depends I guess, but this IMP to me is a pretty involved place with a lot of challenges.

For these duties and operation manuals, well This is done throughout the industry in commercial ventures construction retail what ever. Someone has to sit down and write out step by step procedures and ways and means this place operates from, perhaps there is nothing like that and we operate from the seat of our pants, if so, that has to stop, in order for this place to survive for a long long period of time you need people who know how to step in the gap, now if it is being operated like a mom and pop store, and is a blip on the radar, then it will maybe last 5-10 years, and that is it

In order for it, that is IMP to be successful and last for years and years, beyond our lifetime there has to be a plan in place for successors who have the capability and the desire to make it happen, and a vested interest in the place, who knows on that count , i dont know. but that is how we operated our businesses

Well, that one went on so long I practically died
and had to find a predecessor to read it for me.
I'm sure it made a point...
and I don't know, maybe it's putting the cart before the horse,
or maybe it's not.

I did notice a couple things, on the front page.
First of all, I like how it changes colors. That's very cool.
I will also note that when it hit (at least the one time I saw it come up that way)
the yellow and green one, the TripleC club thingy seemed to
be blocked out by its own black backdrop highlighting for the text there.

Also, I thought of something else,
and this probably would take substantial coding
to institute the algorithm to do it.
Which is, you know that picture of the little bat, and the little devil
playing a bonehead guitar? Well that could probably be something better,
and I thought of this:

That space, could, each time you refresh or revisit the front page,
show, the artist photo, at random, of one of the artists here....
and when you see it, you can click on it,
and it'll take you to That Particular Artist....
extra advertisement for all, at random.
That might be very cool.

Bryon as far as the longterm thing, and preserving it and all that,
I'm as much concerned with preserving my work after my death
as anyone, maybe more so, since I already did a 'test run' on death,
and I am in fact working out plans with one of my oldest fans
to be my historian after I die. But meanwhile,
for me, it's still about nailing our place on the map.
Which is, two things mainly, as I see it:
We spread the word, a lot, much as we possibly can.
And,
We keep making better records.

I mean, fantastic ones.

Basically, I'm reminded of a saying:

Success Doesn't Just Happen....
you have to set yourself on fire first.

I know IMP is basically a 1-2 man show, so thats it. with volunteers and supporters who give a few bucks here and there, some who have given thousands and quite a number of shareholders who invested in the place in the iacmusic days, and perhaps since. so my idea is probably not viable or even necessary or needed, will it go on and on, well if someone pays the server bills and renews the domain name for like 10 years, we are safe, that is probably 20000 bucks , so if it is to remain, then there has to be plan a way and means for it to survive indefinitely, if not, well that be too bad. be cool to be alive 15 years from now, which i aint counting on, i doubt it very much,. I be way up there boys and girls. but if I did live in to my 80s i go, kids ,here is my music, and they might like it.
cheers

"nowhere close to being ready to engage the general public or listeners at this time"

I don't get that. Because some people think the pipeline is too rowdy?

The truth is I've looked for volunteers to help bring new artists here since the relaunch and pretty much gotten no takers. Which makes it a puzzle to me why whenever I post anything resembling a site issue, everyone takes interest. Few folks start threads here about anything (I really wish more would) but then when there's the slightest crack in the door to discuss the site, everybody's leaping forward. I suspect this kind of free-for-all is worse for the public to see than a little bit of profanity here and there.

Out of frustration in several areas, I've considered stepping back out of this, even trying to groom somebody to be my eventual successor but don't really see anyone to pass it to that would want that sort of involvement.

Anyway I kind of think it's a bad idea to keep these threads running because I just don't want to get folks' hopes up, we can only make so much happen.

Hi ALJ,
Yes I agree Neil can speak for himself and I was not commenting on his behalf based of some of his previous content I guessed something he might say and maybe I'm off track on that. If I am Neil can correct me. Since Neil did respond I did not see he disagreed with what I had to say nor did he agree with it either.

Advertising is tricky business and the wrong words can take an add and torpedo it before the bill is even paid.

What I am suggesting is that we should not only carefully review the content of the add to make sure it is tactful and represents us in a way that is valuable but we should also consider if the add on cable is the best advertising dollars to be spent. If we get better results with direct mail or other avenues and I'm not suggesting we would but if we could we should peruse whatever avenue gives us the most bag for our buck.

At least Scott recognized that I am trying to help the add campaign be successful.

Scott, you have done a Yeoman job, like 3-4 people, worked your butt off and improved the place substantially, I think I was coming from the idea of approaching it from a different angle, with no slight against you, you have done something no one else could do, or wanted to. my thoughts are just ideas, with no judgement at all, otherwise I would not stick around and do my little bit which isnt much but a few shekels and a couple station adds here and there. anyways, i will knock it off and quite it with my administrative BS and suggestions

You didn't do anything wrong, Bryon, but as one shareholder just put it in a letter to me, it doesn't look good with the internal site business splashed on the pipeline.

well , it seems to go that way, for some reason, i wont bring up anymore thoughts here, but maybe in private. I would guess I know who that is , but anyways, we do what we can

Oh goodness here we go again with what should or should not be on the pipeline.

Since I am guessing that the admins are in tune with the share holders if such topics responses are just too much to be discussed then I'm guessing once again an important thread will disappear.

So the discussion is out there. Maybe they don't even want us talking about the add either. Is it me or is it suddenly stuffy and a bit stinky in here?

The last half of this thread wasn't about the ad at all really. If it got stuffy it's because the topic was changed by the responses.
