How do we grow the indie culture?
What's wrong is that indies have the superior music but it's just not spreading the way it should.

Most indies are mainly concerned with their own music, how do we get people, artists and listeners, to become involved with this culture?

There are going to be very very few of us here who are willing to acknowledge others music and support each other in the way that it has been done in the past. That is obvious and has changed dramatically here at IAC/IMP over the years that I have been around. The thing is, there is so much of it music that is, and more opportunities and easier to access the technology to make music, some of it is reasonable but i wont say that indies make superior music , a lot of it is chopped bologna, uninspired contrived and pretty unoriginal.

There are a few around here though that do indeed make some amazing music ,not following in the confined space of what they may hear and perhaps be motivated by others from the various platforms around town, or in cafe's or going on a weekly basis to a friends house developing their craft. I know someone who has done this for 20 years and various styles of music. Much is in the vault so to speak.

Back to your point. how do we get people artists and listeners to become involved with this culture, here at this time. That is a process, a long hard road to success like any business. it has to be lead by example , by communication, by sharing ones vision and ones hopes for this place. It is a complicated question, but a simple answer is that we all have to be vested in the organization not looking to be something we are not, or not looking to be acknowledged as special but as part of the way to do as much as we can individually supporting and encouraging others to good deeds and music

People in this day and age are so self absorbed and self indulgent , it is a reflection of the times we live in. So the challenge to make this culture one that lasts is going to be very difficult, one, time is valuable, two ,who is willing to empty themselves of their time to help others be successful and or noticed, not many, we are selfish creatures and very few rise above that attitude in a way to participate and be a trail blazer. not many here wish to, or want to, they have their own agenda

birdy's eye view

Sometimes the songs people say they love seem very derivative, very predictable, even boring to me because I have been exposed to so much music over the years and now it takes more to satisfy me.

But it takes time to become a connoisseur of music, to see it as an art rather than a technical process that produces a pleasing sound. It's only when people get tired of formulaic songs that they will start to seek out something original, something to make them think, something to really listen to. Think back to the stuff you used to listen to before you appreciated songs with more to offer, I'm sure, like me, you were much easier to please back then.

I often hear music blaring out of car windows or builders boom boxes and it's obviously making them so happy they want to share it with the whole street. They think they're so cool and their music says something about who they are. How could I ever persuade them to play something more creative, artistic, emotive, that would be a tough gig,

I think the time will come when listeners start experimenting outside of their comfort zone. We must wait for the light-bulb moment. It might happen when popular artists break away from the tried and tested. The bigger and more influential indie artists become the more tastes will change, but people still wont listen to unknown amateurs until they become mainstream, that's human nature.

I have gone of topic a little but it was on my mind anyway so I thought I'd opine here.

Good points Birdy, we learn by doing, by copying and by experimenting trying being inventive and or creative as best as we can . I know my first songs way back were, well bad, when i look back, it is a process. takes time and I wasnt the best of players, but worked my azz off to improve, still far cry from of the people I know. but do what I know best.

I am all for organic acoustic sounds and the flow that drifts from the piano or acoustic guitar, not always into the digitally driven electronic and samplings of percussion or other instruments with over production.

As for projects of this type. I did that recently with my kick back just relax undertaking, its out there in the world, on a number of radio stations, having some reasonable sales, up for a few licensing opportunities, its doing its thing, not doing what I thought it would, but that is fine, as for the experience, well it is fun, developing songs writing and having other musicians involved ,hiring people, engineers, producers getting it mastered and putting together a pretty big undertaking. and costing a pretty penny as well.

but my craft is in organic acoustic live performance. that is my personal love. think my days of doing another project with many instruments and people are done.

I am a piano man, nothing more, nothing less

We have to figure out a way to improve the bottom line for indies. I have been an indie for over 50 years. But the vast majority of that time I worked two and sometimes three jobs just to keep myself and my family afloat. If we can figure out a way to attract the same millions of music buyers to the indie world then maybe more indies will get involved. But at this point, most indies are working day jobs and doing music in their spare time. This is a critical issue that must be addressed if we want indies to truly thrive and get involved in the indie world. This culture is a sad culture with few successes. People need to see something that inspires them to get involved. Maybe a few song download sales or royalty checks help but that is temprorary. How we do that is Greek to me. I know how to make my own money but I don't know how to help others make money. But clearly that is an important part of the equation. People go to where the money is. I suspect that an indie site like this that has a membership of almost all musicians cannot truly become that model because all of the people are in the same boat trying to float their own lives through the canal of despair known as musicianship. Yes, it brings us tremendous joy to play and perform but sooner or later you have to grow up and pay some bills. That is an unfortunate truth about life. So, if we can help people to learn how to make money at this we can grow the indie appeal to listeners and create a shimmering sign of hope for those who have given up. I know so many performers who toured all over the world for many years but never made a decent living from it. I know, I know, its all been said before but as a teacher and mentor to young folks I feel an obligation to help them to learn how to make a living from this business. Also, I disagree. There are some indies that are mainly concerned with their own music but most that I know are more concerned with making a living at this. So, if we can improve the indie business model maybe more indies will get involved. But the way it is now, most indies are too busy trying to pay that light bill to become involved with this culture. It took me retiring from two occupations before I could start doing music full time. Also, after many years of toiling in the industry I finally started getting my music signed to indie labels. But it took such a long time to get here. If I wasn't such a die hard person I would have said "fuck it" and given up 30 years ago. I have seen hundreds of really good musicians say "fuck it" and give up. It always breaks my heart when that happens because I know how it feels to have real life problems while pursuing your dreams. Rent and hungry babies are much bigger attention grabbers than the indie culture. Most indies just want to be able to exist in this business. How can you exist when everything costs you money and you aren't making any? How can you be inspired when you can't put food in your babies mouths? At that point your priorities change. You do whatever you have to do to feed your family and pay your bills. Your art may suffer from that decision but it is the right decision for you. If we can figure out a way to fix that for young musicians, maybe we can create a real movement of indies. But the way it is now is too depressed. Indies are competing for the few music industry jobs available and that is such a sad thing. So, my answer to your question is that we must figure out a rock solid way of monetizing music and become the catalyst for that. The indie life is a struggle without the big budgets and promotional resources. The internet was supposed to be the thing that would make all things equal for majors and indies. But that hasn't panned out to be true. So, we must figure out a comprehensive strategy not to get rich but to sustain yourself as a musician. If we build that the indies will come and many that are already here will become much more involved.

Much Respect
Stoneman

If you've got the $$$... sponsor a tour or at least a bunch of local shows throughout the country.
Or you could advertise in bars and clubs throughout the country...

Grass root projects are fine to start with but if you really want your numbers to grow you probably need to spend some dough where the people go...

I find most Musician sites are the same... 15-20 regulars another dozen floaters that come and go a troll or two and the occasional drive-byes...
Deja-vu all over again.

Jeff hit it on the mark. And I have said the same thing about the hardcore participants i the past , numerous times, maybe 15, and the drifters and sometimers and old timers my honest opinion we aint there yet, we will never be. If you are not operating this place like a biz, and giving everything away for free, you'll never get anywhere. The concept is brilliant, it is fantastic, amazing, genius, there is nothing like it anywhere, the only thing lacking is income, support from valid sources, the organization has been on life support so to speak a number of times, we all have seen it flounder but rise again,

There is no value placed on what one gets , so its like welfare, its a handout. no appreciation for what we get, free this, free that,a presence online and songs to upload, very few truly dole out the dollars, it aint an enterprise and not being run like a valid business, but maybe that is ok

And you are up against some killer operations that provide artist services, so like Jeff said ,there is going to have to have some kind of plan, it it has been tried in the past, music sites are all over the place. There is a glut of them milking musicians too. So what do you as a place want to offer. why would people come here? are we past due?

Plan, Purpose Vision. easy to say. hard to do. I have run 3 business in my life

construction, promotion and teaching. each one takes a hell of a lot of start up costs and then constant driving dedication. all are different ,there is one theme involved, sacrifice, sticking with it and dedication. Then the sense of accomplishment of what one has one, provided a service. and knowing how to run a business successfully , work hard, serve the thing you love, money is the gravy but so necessary for survival, start up costs, advertising, promoting word of mouth.

it is amazing this place has survived as long as it has, a credit to those involved and those who have sacrificed and supported it.

cheers

Music is dead. Even hip hop and rap is like grandpa's music now. Music will not become important again until someone comes up with a new genre. I can hardly listen to my old favorites anymore. And none of the new shit is original enough for my ears. All I listen to anymore is the jazz masters and the classics. And indigenous music. I like that. Rock and pop mostly just bores the shit out of me. Except for Taylor Swift.

Larree said "Music is dead", Well that might be true Larree, and probably is dead although I hope for the sake of our souls it aint, kids got their Smartphones and listen to a lot of music that way, in fact most do. who sits on their ass anymore listening to music lol!!! in front of a computer, streaming it, nope, dont work that way anymore

No music is not dead, maybe creativity and originality could be dead to some degree, but as long as my piano isnt invaded by rats mice or the weather, music will be something that comes from my heart and soul, my inner being and my spirit and i will share it here and elsewhere,

I know when i go somewhere and there is a piano, an acoustic piano, none of this digital crap, and i play it is like magic. People love the sounds of an acoustic piano or guitar, in a cafe, or small bar. places like over in Europe where music is appreciate so much more then it is here in north america , that i know for sure

music lives and is not dead, unless we blow our human race up, but then maybe the birds will sing while our bones turn white and we disappear into the earth

Naaaaw... not dead
Stale maybe but not dead.

Most cities still have a local music scene and there are small to medium festival tours every year.
People may stream rather than buy but they still listen.

There is an audience. Even if you're not part of it.

Streaming is king, think about it, think about all the smartphones out there, and spotify which is king of the streaming music thing right now, and there are others as well. my brother and his band get huge streams from their catalog and make some decent shekels that way, hard to believe but true, streaming is the way people listen to music, sure some people still download, but streaming is the ruler.

Oy, what a subject, and what a bush full of chirping birdies.
Tweeta-tweeta-tweet.

Streaming does seem to be a 'major thing' and component
to the modern day form of the music business, presently...

I think a lot of things about all this.

One of the most truthful and dead-on accurate things I've heard in this thread,
is, 'Music is Dead'.... that comes to us courtesy of Larree. Thanks, Lar.

It's arguable of course, but makes its point,

because whatever the style of music,
and personally I don't think it's about creating a new genre
unless that genre is called 'music made by people who still may give a fuck',

because, the fact, that someone can say "Music is Dead" and it rings at all
true, why is that? That's because no one gives a shit.

No one even knows what the fuck they're imitating anymore.

The thing needs to be come at fresh.
Regardless, of what genre of music you do,

and Larree's also right about Hip Hop by now having become Grandpa Music,
smart guy you are, Lar, no one can take that from you...

But, really.

In Mainstream, absolutely no one gives a crap.
It's all about the dollar. Dollar. Dollar. Dollar.

And if there's set ups out there, making that dollar from streaming,
then that's the 'thing'...

I don't worry about that shit.

My concern, is we need to write better songs, and make better records,
that's my mandate for myself, and for my band B'sex.

One mistake I have made, is to become too enamored with
what my own band members have been a part of in the past.
It was fun, but now it's done, we make fresh new, or we can go poo poo.

Everyone's a lame-ass, there, someone said it.

Let's all stop being fuckin' lame-asses,
and make records that do not suck.

We do that, ever, and you watch,
people will start to notice....

IF, we can do that.

If I can do it, even with their help.

They don't have to prove shit to anybody. They know it.
They did it.

And me, I'm only trying to do it for the sake of knowing,
that once,

I actually did it.

Which is why we're working on a whole entire brand new album,
BEATLESEX of course,

and, no one will hear a damned note of it,
till the whole thing's done.

But, that's kind of it....

Indie Culture, does deserve to grow,

it just needs more champions,

we're trying to be that, and do that,

but don't leave it all to us,

Everybody,

Decide, to hit it fresh,

Remember, your job, as an artist.

To say the stuff they don't know how to say yet.

Got all that?

There will be a quiz.

~L, out

The indie culture is screwed. Big difference between now and the early days of IAC. A lot of people here and elsewhere on the indie map just don't give a crap about anybody else's music than their own. I don't even know why anybody even speaks of indie culture, it's every fucker for themselves, that's what it's deteriorated to in this era.

It is easier to have that kind of scene camaraderie with groups of artists when there is live interaction. That is why 'local scenes' were so cool. But that kind of thing can never happen again because of immediate worldwide transmission via social media. The only hope for a real indie 'scene' would have to exist in a virtual reality environment. Like... Second Life! (Oh no! Not that crap again!)

Well... first, before I address Larree's point, and I will...

I wanna say,

yeah, I figured someone was gonna call me on that sooner or later.

"Whatta ya mean we're all lame-asses!"

I should point out, I am my own worst critic.
I'm not just hard on myself. I am fucking relentless.
So, to me, I'm the biggest freakin' lame-ass in the world,
and why? Because I have me some lofty goals.

And, failure is not an option.

Yes. There IS, a staggering amount of talent here. No argument.
And, I have, heard some records, here, at IMP,

that were so good, I wondered why the artists weren't
all over the place world famous to a ridiculous degree.

So, everybody, please take note,
it's up to you, to decide what degree if any of 'lame ass' you are
challenged with. It depends on many factors.

I don't wanna just make great records, I want, what may be impossible,
but I'm still gonna try!

I wanna be, the sunuvabitch who breaks through the wall,

and begins,

wait for it....

"The Indie Invasion".

Now that, to me, would be cool.

And since, since I set my sights so damned high,

well look at it for what it is,

that means, no matter how good I am, or how good I get,
if I don't break through to 'lighting up the whole world
like a Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree',

then I, am still a lame-ass. And, I may suck.

I don't wanna be a lame-ass, and I don't wanna suck.

It's harder than it looks though, to do the impossible.
But that's what I'm trying to go for.

Now, Larree...

it's not that there is no more 'local scene',

local just got a fuckall lot bigger is really the gist of it.

We, here, at IMP, we are, the local scene,
only now, 'local' means global. That in and of itself is pretty cool.

It's a small world after all and it just got smaller,
which is good, 'cause, well there's a lot of potential,
a whole world full....

now, you keep pitching the Second Life thing,
and it's not like I have never considered any of that,
but I do have thoughts on it. For one thing, I never liked the name.
Consider it so douchey I wanna go soak my head till I feel better.

Then, there's the limited lousy animation. Oh it's a matter of opinion, right?
Potatoes Potahtoes...
plus, I can't even figure out, how any sort of animation program,
is figuring out how to 'draw' you in any likeness (anyone, not just you...)
while you're actually performing? Mostly, I don't understand the thing,
perhaps you might consider a 'take the mystery out of second life' thread.

I think it needs a better name, and it should have cooler animation,
it's a thing that could, catch on, and catch on big even,
if, if it were better.

Look at other stuff, that's up and coming.
VR. Virtual Reality, those thingies that go on your head
and you have a virtual world in front of you.
Now that, is something I think will be stupid big,

like now how everybody and their ankles have a cellphone?

Another thing, and this is really gonna be big,
but no one's thought of it yet,

is the world of robotics....

you know how they have blow up dolls?

In the future, they'll have, pretty intricate humanoid, robots,
(which, I believe, are also known as 'androids')
that, are, for lack of better words 'fuck puppets'...

laugh now, it'll be a trillion dollar industry,
there's a lot of lonely people out there, people who for one reason
or another won't find their 'perfect match' on match dot com
or anywhere else, and, now they can go buy a rechargeable mate.

But, now I'm just pontificating and prognosticating,
(so I'm arguably masturbating, is the point there)

How do we grow the indie culture?
Stop thinking of it so much as an indie culture.

Most of us here are artists,
the answer is grow ourselves. To be better artists.
As for listeners,

well, listeners can post too.

I think more people would utilize the pipeline,
if they only realized, how easy it is,
that you can talk about, oh, pretty much anything.

Lousy education, poorly paid teachers leading to not enough teachers,
and maybe not as good teachers as teachers used to be....

Teachers should be paid better, I think, but I don't wanna leap into
another political argument...

Point is, if you have never learned how to express yourself,
it can appear daunting. You can think "I don't know how to do this."

Begin thusly:

You Belong.

Whether you listen, or sing,
You Belong.
Here.

Make yourself at home.

Really Larree, I am not opposed to 'Second Life' on principle,
(though in my case, I got many many lives behind me,
so second, no, I'm up into higher than that, hundredth life is more like it...
I have some exceptions to the name, and to the look of the animation choices...
the medium has potential... arguably all the more for we the old fat and round
who may still rock,

but maybe don't quite look it like we used to.

But even that, when does one say,

"Screw it, I look how I look, and I make music. There it is."

Sooner than later, I hope.

You wanna grow indie culture?

Start with you.

That's how I'm going about it,
outside of some yackety yack in the morning here,

which is good for me by the way,
since I'm a recluse to be sure, and I'd not have any friends at all otherwise....

well, besides the stretching of the legs on the pipeline,

it's all down to,

now go into that studio, water your head,

and GROW You Music Beanstalk, You.

You get my argument?

We don't focus on 'growing the culture' per se.
We focus, on growing ourselves.
Because we ARE the culture.

Oh. I thought of this, I think yesterday,
it hit me like epiphany.

And this, directly is in your control, Scott.

You know, the daily quote,
that you put a new one up every day?

Okay, here's my suggestion,
I don't know how you're gonna take it, but I'll say it just the same.

From Now On....

Any of us, we the Indie Music People,
may find ourselves, specifically a notable quote we ourselves may have said,
'cause all that has to happen for that to happen is,
you say something cool, cool enough to stick,

and then, you get quoted on it. It only works if you said something cool.
No point in posting a quote that isn't very cool.

But that's the idea,

because, follow me through the building on this one, Scott,

if we only have 'established known signed mainstream' artists
in the daily quote,

well that Sir, is a reminder, to each of us,
every, single, day,

'Hey, you may rock, but you're not these guys."

And, my argument, my friend,
would be, uh,

yeah, yeah we are.

So include our words as well,
spoken 'out of the mouths of babes',
in the 'possible quoteable' list.

That's my idea.

You know, like, and I'm using myself as a for instance,

"We don't focus on 'growing the culture' per se.
We focus, on growing ourselves.
Because we ARE the culture. " ~ Lesley Jane

A cool quote, is a cool quote. It doesn't need to have a freakin' record
contract in order to be allowed to be called cool, that's nonsense.
So, to only have quotes from mainsteamers,
that runs smack in the face into what we're here to do,

establish, just like in Horton Hears A Who,

to the whole world,

we are here, we are here, we are here, We Are HERE.

That would require programming I can't do, on top of that I wouldn't ask our tech guy to do because there are far more important fixes that need to be done.

Of more immediate importance is the fact that virtually no one on the pipeline has submitted nominations for the Golden Kayaks and there's around a week left to do that. Right now I'm considering cancelling because so few care to bother with their peers' music here.

I'm going to vote, but where is the genre list to copy and paste?
The kayak takes you to the Ladies Of Indie CD sale.

I didn't find anything on the front page that signifies where to go for the genres and where to send them.
I know it was there before.

I must be missing something here?

May I be a facetious smart ass and say that

a CULTURE is known as a MICROORGANISM and that sums up Indies, so if you want to grow it you'll need a petri dish and some agar jelly

At the end of the day, all 'indie artist' really is is a nice way of saying 'unsigned artist'. Kind of like 'sanitation engineer' is a nice way of saying 'trash man'.

Maybe the Kayaks should be done differently.

It's interesting to see what other Indie Music sites are up to, how they make money and attract people. So I checked out Indie Rock Cafe. They don't have a community, they just feature indie artists with large color pics or videos and reviews, they have a top 10 best and new releases bit. Quite simple really and no info about the place that I could see.

Then I saw a heading "SUBMIT YOUR MUSIC" and I thought OK, I'll see how easy this is.

Firstly they make the statement that they are "inundated with submissions and can't cope" so they offer you a 'fast track' submission where you can jump ahead of the rest.

So for $33 a shot you can be told you suck without having to wait.

I imagine Indie artists like yourselves (maybe even you) will be tempted to try for a place on 'this busy, influential site that cares about your future' They say they have 1000s of streams and downloads. They say you could get noticed by the industry pros. I think they'll even offer you a service to get more noticed - for a cost.

Hey, these places even claim to have listeners but how could they prove it?

No site has stats [like IMP] where you not only know who's listened, you know how many times and for how long. Sadly, for many of you this will be 2 plays a day for 30 seconds if you're lucky. But at least you'll know for sure and not imagine you're getting 200 plays a day like on other sites I could mention.

IMP is too open and honest for it's own good. Lovely little IMP is letting every man and his guitar or synthesizer have a front pace slot and their own station - all for nothing. It's too good to be true.

IMP should have people battering on the doors "Let me in"

My theory is that the more exclusive you make a site they more people will want to be there.

They should want what site provides the best features which we do. That said, having all the music we do on the site I think is the most important thing for what we're ultimately about. IAC made a mistake offering those lifetime subscriptions, with those we lost our reasonable revenue model. We're struggling but still trying to find workable options.

I beleive Indie Culture is growing but it's not growing as one phenomena but as smaller spin off groups or scenes.

In Japan Indie is huge as Japanese Rock
South Korea have K-Pop
Certain areas of countries like Australia and New Zealand have become Indie centres
Canada have some big Indie bands with followers

You have the 'Madchester' scene and Seatle 'Grunge' then lots of Indie clubs in San Francisco.

So it might not be spreading online and in record sales so much but the live Indie scene is huge and growing.

Quite true Verity. New Orleans and Atlanta are actually huge live music locations with thriving music industry scenes. I also agree about Japan. Tokyo has a big Rap music scene. So does Seoul Korea. Then there is Brazil with the strong Latin music scene. All over the world there are music cultures that are striving and maintaining themselves. Music Is Not Dead. Just because someone says something it doesn't mean it is true. Get out into the world and you will discover that music is the one thing that rules it. Music changes the human psyche. It puts people in special moods. Sort of like this time of year with all the holiday music. It makes people more compassionate and generous to each other. I love that shit! I love hearing the songs from my childhood. It always puts me right back in the days of old. The day that music dies, we all die. Without it we are all empty souls without purpose.

I'd be happy to resubscribe - I've taken advantage of it for years now! I'm sure others would feel the same.

Anyone here with a reddit account ?

Look at this post;

https://www.reddit.com/r/WeAreTheMusicMakers/comments/3leb31/have_any_of_you_worked_withused/?st=iwhx1puk&sh=70b36f79

this is the type of "misinformation" that doesn't really help things for IMP,

Perhaps someone with the touch of eloquence could put them straight.

I cant do it, as I just come over as Captain Angry in these situations.

Anyway, just a thought...
