Experiences of people saying, well you suck!
Oh I have had many of those comments during my music life.

"I don't like the way you play piano" ( while providing background music at a large convention)

Or at a gig at a private large gathering in Chilliwack BC, Someone who causually knew me said "That can't be him singing" as one person said to another who came up and told me what they said "it must be a recording he can't be really singing", , ( I actually do have a decent voice or so I have been told )

Sitting across from a table at a recording studio we built years ago and my partner brother said to me after I asked if I could participate in some recording projects

he said
"What if you suck"

Like that was a dagger!!

Well maybe at that time, I probably did suck.

So over the years I worked, played a lot. Worked my chops

One time in Victoria BC I was wandering through a Mall (cant do that now!) and this guy was playing lights out, jazz, walking bass comps the whole shebang. I stopped in my tracks and was blown away, mesmerized. I just stood there, watching, and wished I could play like that and wondered how the hell can I get there

When I got home I practiced walking bass, trying my dang best to work all that walking bass, chord comps melody all to to one bag. It was painful, I was awful, like I could play other styles, but this guy inspired me, I wanted badly to do the same, it was too cool.

So everyday I worked at that style, building my approach and improving my practice routine. in between lessons of teaching, learning more tunes to add to my repertoire as well of other styles

One day, about a year in, it was like an epiphany ,all that effort, daily practicing incorporating the walking bass line it just happened so smoothly, perhaps I did not noticed maybe I was getting it, but that one moment in time it was like a miracle ,and when I played at gigs, people would comment how well I could play, and be my own everything, bass, rhythm lead melody. It was fascinating, Now I aint no George Gershwin, Chick Corea, or any kick ass well know jazzer. But I know how to do it pretty well,. It was discouraging at times but I plowed through and finally realized my goal of want to play like that guy in that Mall , so even if you suck in other peoples eyes, you just keep doing. improving, pushing down the walls of doubt and work hard you will achieve your goals, but it takes inspiration and working ones ass off to get there .

An old friend and fan of my older music called me after listening to Guitar God System. He told me he listened to "Who's the Guitar God Now?" I asked him if he liked it. His reply? "I want my five minutes back"!

well I'm sure I've been told that more than anyone here. When I first started I was posting on this home recording forum and called myself the future of rock, then the whole community spent years trying to cut me down to size.

One time I sent a batch of my CDs to a friend to give away at a charity event and afterwards this artist went on a forum to announce to everyone he had my CD and threw it out the car window on the way home.

Well; FT, yeah I get where you are coming from, although many times I have done some pretty nice reviews of your works, and you are a wonderful songcrafter, you have a skill I dont, lyrics with music, and you write meaningful and compelling poetry if I can say that that are well positioned within your music and you do have a good voice for certain songs, so yes we have all experienced being slagged and or made fun of, I have a number of other occasions where I was laughed at when I first started writing, it is very disconcerting and cuts to the core, but that is and was the reality , I was learning, developing, still trying , there are people to this day that dont like me or my playing, I was told recently I should not be posting some of my stuff and just do my piano works only. As those properly reflect who I am, I agree, yes that is my instrument of choice and one that truly is me. Yet 10 -12 years ago I started to learn working with music software, I had been using Tascam porta 07 which I still have and use on occasion. IT was a big learning curve. And yeah, much of my early stuff was kinda lame, even now there are tunes I should not post I guess. So I ignore people who say do this dont do that, F--k em. I will just keep on going.

Now I have a bit of success here, thanks for all the people who nominate my songs here and there, and for station manager of the year which I appreciate. I loved listening to so many people, yourself, Steve April Steve Ison Bob Elliott Francesca Tamellini Todd from Hop on Pop, countless others for the last 16 or so years here, learned a lot just by listening, and to all the people for the last 20 years I have been promoting, amazing musicians I have been blessed to be here, and to listen to great music and to promote the artists I have represented

Now, I step back, take a breath. take a break. and enjoy life. I feel satisfied with my accomplishments, I have nothing to prove. although I felt at times I had to prove my worth and develop myself, I was never a competitor until late in my life, I wanted to show people I have the stuff. I dont suck. I like myself and that is all that counts.

Now I was not impressed with someone within my own family telling me that I should stick to piano, screw that. lol

cheers Father Time. you rock!!

When I first started out I had more confidence than sufficient talent. A record company guy said “Don’t quit your day job. Music is an expensive hobby”. At the time I didn’t have a day job to quit! I spent years working to get “good enough” to make a living doing what I loved. But there’s no doubt that although rejection hurts it also motivates. I admire FT for hanging in there!

Haha the first recordings I ever did really did suck but I put them up anyway back on Myspace as it was then - I got some terrible comments but I also got some good ones on my blogs and it encouraged me to get better and I eventually did some pretty good recordings - I still occasionally put up rough awful first attempts just to get the idea across before recording it properly - I think it's fine as long as you don't take comments too personally - you can't please everyone that's for sure!
