Clapton _ Overrated?
Yes.

Take out White Room and Layla and what you have is some okay songs and a lot of crap. He peaked with Cream. Worst of all was his Unplugged garbage when he became Mr. Easy Listening. I despise the song Tears in Heaven, that was one of the most overplayed overpraised songs in history.

I will say that I still love White Room til this day. It's one of the best records ever made. I would never turn that song off. Why did he stop making music like that, he is a major disappointment.

The man has an incredible catalog....period. Yea, I think you are leading up to The Beatles being overrated..... this is getting silly Bro.

Tears in Heaven was written after his Baby son fell out a fricken window...It is both touching and beautiful. Grow some ears friend... Being overplayed is not the fault of Clapton.

SEE? what'd I tell you. It's the same motif, with rock & roll / blues /reggae, etc., GREATS leadin' up to the beatles. It's kind of silly. so why are we still responding to the blogs? He's gonna say OVERRATED and we're pretty much all gonna agree -= NO! Get the pattern? C'mon Traeshy your a funny, intelligent persona, you can blog better than this!

Probably the most common gripe on Clapton made by the people who know him (Keith, Knopfler, Bruce etc...) is that he's a bit lazy on his records but to say he hasn't done anything valid since Cream is lunacy. C'mon...take away the mystique etc. and tell me your ears wouldn't perk up hearing "Tears in Heaven", "Forever Man" or "The Core" on the radio now. I wish he'd stayed a lil' grittier but cut him some slack....the blues guys who inspired him don't have any problems with him mate.

Take out his proficiency on his instrument, and he is still a great Artist. If he only played rhythm guitar his body of work as a songwriter and singer puts him in the Hall Of Fame. I have great respect for him.

I'm familiar with 461 Ocean Boulevard and it didn't do a lot for me.

I know a lot of people embraced Tears in Heaven because of the subject matter but I just found it to be a weak song.

Forever Man is one of his better solo offerings.

Clapton benefitted from being on the cover of Guitar Player magazine many times, he was the first guitar hero. I agree he is a lot more talented than Eddie Van Halen who isn't even worth mentioning on his own blog thread but Eric's songs just aren't that interesting.

Besides his own work .... Do you have any idea how many songs are graced with Clapton's magnificent guitar playing ?
... and how many top notch artist have sought him out to play for them ? ... or how many top notch artist would give their left nut just to be able to have half that ability ?

I still think Alvin Lee is the best guitar player I have ever witnessed (of course others may think differently) but Clapton probably rates in the top five anywhere, and in the top ten for sure ...

..and I see that when mentioning his early works you don't even mention the "Blind Faith" Album ... Which is way way under-rated ...

Thats cool Larree, I am basing my opinion as a Singer Songwriter...Its what I do, and I think Clapton is great at being a singer songwriter. He asked for help on the lyric for Tears of Heaven, It was very painful for him to write. Even if he wrote half the songs in his entire catalog, ala Elton John It does not diminish his relevance.

I only "get by" as a Lead guitarist, so I look at him differently I guess. I know you have called him out more then once. :)

Well, I wrote you off as clueless when you wrote Marley was overrated, but I always thought Clapton has done an awful lot of dull stuff. Not that he can't play. Of course he can, but an awful lot of dull material he's put out, and there are surely a lot of good lead guitar players.

Wonderful lead ability, but when he gets rated as "god," he better have some great material. But he more often than not does not.

I know you are Larry, but you have rated your proficiency above his on the axe, so its easier to dismiss him I guess.

I guess it depends where you think he is rated, rating him as "God" would qualify as overrated to some... There are plenty other Guitarists that are technically better.

I just think he is a solid artist..I would love to have written his catalog. Everyone has their share of clinkers and dull songs.

Amazingly, I can't but be drawn to Traeshy's blog again! MOST people I know who LOVE Eric Clapton are guitar players, and people who grew up on CREAM & his earlier shit.

Great Guitarist in my opinion, but I was give a 2 volume set of ERIC Clapton's best & I've never listened to it.

I would listen to Velvet Underground, The Beatles, Sonic Youth, The Melvins, The Pixies, The Stones, Violent Fems, Elvis Costello, the STONE ROSES, The Fall, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, NIRVANA, Sublime,Bob marley, Tupac, Howlin' Wolf, Aerosmith, The Beastie Boys, The Alarm, Brian Eno, David Bowie, Operation Ivy, Cypress Hill or Ludacris -- LONG before Eric Clapton...

He just doesn't have the PASSION that these other folks have.

Currently, I'd play MANY of IAC's and TUCSON's Indie artists, before givin' Eric a listen.

SORRY for diss-in' your running motif Traeshy, it gets GREAT Response from the IAC artists, so you must be doing SOMETHIN' right with your "OVERRATED" series of Blogs.

I'd have to agree that he is overrated. I have to admit though, that I have not listened to everything he's written. But from what I have heard and owned over the last 25 years or more, I haven't heard anything that would give him a status of best rock guitarist ever! Which at one time I remember him being labeled. But with that said, Clapton has written some of the best and most memorable songs. He comes up with great hooks, smooth guitar riffs, and just plain fun stuff to listen to. I'm sure everyone here can relate to how hard that is to do!

But, yeah, he is overrated IMO.

Have I entered some strange blogging universe whereas certain posts just sort of appear and then mysteriously vanish overnight ?

I could swear only just yesterday there was a post by a certain brilliant artist better known as Brendan from The Great Indoors that posted something in the order of...

TRAESHY_OVERRATED ? ( or something like that )

... and there was laughter to be had by all, I know this because whilst I was not joining in said blog activity, I was sipping some sort of refreshing beverage watching Brendan with a very ominous yet wicked expression on his face whilst distracting himself from other open windows that were in much more urgent need of his skillful and rather intensely focused attentions. hmmm

I wonder, was it in fact deleted ? Of course, I am in denial as I can't wrap my head around something or someone being that lame... but stranger things have happened.

Some is great. Some sucks.
Layla... is a perfect record.

And, even as a parent, I find "Tears In Heaven" to be cloying, even crass... in particular with the timeframe in which it was released (only a few months after his son's death.) It may have been a sincere composition, but to release it so soon -- AS A SINGLE -- smacks of... something.

I am a Dad, and If it happened to me I would want to die. Clapton was devastated for months, none of us can know his personal torment. To me music can be a healing experience. Perhaps it helped him deal with the tragedy...I won't judge him . Bottom line it's a beautiful song period. The melody, instrumentation... just great. Can we know for sure proceeds from the song were not donated to charity in his son's name??? I won't put a cynical twist on it, it was a god awful tragedy that no parent should endure.

I disagree so much with that. Surely the sentiments are heartfelt but the melody is lazy and the lyrics are especially lazy, they make me cringe. How many lines can you end in the word heaven?

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven
I'll find my way, through night and day
Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven

Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knee
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please

(instrumental)

Beyond the door
There's peace I'm sure.
And I know there'll be no more...
Tears in heaven

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

Cause I know I don't belong

You know what the greatest thing about Clapton is? It's got nothing to do with song writing or prowess in playing the guitar. It's that he openly championed his influences and gave something back, when so many others at the time just took. In case you guys Stateside forgot, way back in the late 60's early 70's guys like BB King, Albert King et al were forgotten men. It seemed that folks weren't interested in their own glorious musical heritage, especially if you were talkin' bout black music. As a matter of fact I don't think you woulda pissed on those ol' blues guys if they was on fire! Eric always made a point of mentioning his influences in interviews and was largely responsible for introducing/educating a lot of young white kids into checking out the wondrous variety that is the blues and revitalising the careers of his musical heros. In fact Eric has continued paying back that debt til today featuring BB and Hubert Sumlin at the Crossroads Festivals and promoting both young players and his peers, which if asked, he would openly admit were 'better' guitarists than he is. So.....like him or hate him, leave Eric alone. He paid his dues, and makes a living playing the music he loves, which is surely what we all aspire to do. How many others can claim the same?

I Think Sam rests the case succinctly!

Eric sat and watched the first Hendrix gig in London, and allegedly had to have a cigarette to calm his nerves after the show!

The man has a pedigree not matched by many others!

So The CODE verdict is: NOT OVERRATED!!!
