the need for critical opinions in music

Since I came online in around 1999 I've been spouting my opinions about artists and songs. Social media has changed a lot in that time. Used to be more of a wild wild west, but now the landscape is controlled by a more civil facebook style of discourse. Few people want to get in that deep, it takes some courage to go out on a limb particularly with negative opinions, almost every time you express one, you rub somebody the wrong way. It's gotten so all the opinions out there now on most corners of the web are basically competing praises. Thing is though, this is another example or what is now referred to as fake news, how can there even be discerning opinions if everything is so good, so rave worthy? Kudos stop having any meaning if everything is wonderful. Actual evaluations become moot. I personally really hate when I see someone raving about something that I hear as mediocre but that is not a popular vantage point, it's an easy way to make enemies, in fact. But unless somebody has the balls to put those opinions out there, we might as well not even be allowed to state opinions any more, it's all mush, all bullshit. Yes I know everybody has their own subjective opinion but when you only say good things do you have one at all anymore? Is it frowned upon now to have discriminating tastes, whatsoever then? We are given language for a better reason than this. Seems to me if you got to keep your negativity to yourself, free expression is being usurped by politeness/congeniality, this is not a healthy state of affairs.

who the fuck cares, made up music is an opinion of sorts, on the state of the world, or on ones own view of the world is to them, or it could be a way to share how they feel about love, friendship, or dumb assholes like you or me LOL yeah thats it dumb know it alls who think they have a corner on the market of being the God know it all expert. well we all know its there as art, who the fuck cares ,an painter paints a landscape, who is expressing their own view of the art, the landscape ,how it hits them, they dont give a fuck whether someone likes it, and if they do, great, it may be mediocre to some ,wild and crazy to others. you are missing the point. people like to listen to something that makes them feel good, why in the fuck is necessary to give an opinion. I guess because one has nothing else better to do, or perhaps they consider themselves musicoligists. what ever that means.

Go have an ice cream and critique that

Opinions and critical thinking, we have enough of those things in the world, lets just have fun instead of ANAL lysing everything from music to politics ,art to science. Music when it is happening, words and music, well it is is something spontaneous, sometimes in the spur of the moment , something jigged the brain and those who have the ability tap into that special moment what ever inspired them to create! music art inventions ,whatever. its a magical special moment it doesnt need to be thinked about, lol ASSHOLE a lised

but wait there's more. the way I see it, one works their craft out playing working their chops ,honing ones skills and do enough of their own analyzing , practicing. some will never be writers of music, they will be just players of others music, that creative thing is not part of their make up./ some might be brilliant at performing, yet cant write anything worth listening to, guess that is what you are getting at, some have it , some dont. Some have a talent and penchant for the creative aspect in making things up, in whatever trade , music is just one thing. It is suppose to one part of ones being, if music is all there is, in ones life, that be pretty boring to me, although having a multi faceted life doing all kinds of things, that keeps me keeping things in perspective.

Music, well yes, there is some , wait a lot of crap floating around, but yet, perhaps that crap can turn into fertilizer . Music is a way of escape for some, or a way to get some therapy or a way to share ones skills with others playing live, or if lucky enough getting it out into the world, I mean, not just somewhere sitting on someplace in the ether, but somewhere where ones craft is really appreciated beyond ones only little world.

Yeah lets eat ice cream , and start a revolution, MAKE MUSIC GREAT AGAIN!!!

HAHA

aw fuck it all to hell

its the negative tendencies that caused this position :)

So one may like a song, another may hate it, so what. What comes across as a vibe you may not like has no bearing or credence at all with someone who loves a certain style. so I say this, it is not worth even discussing. waste of time

You say you hate when people rave about something mediocre Scott, but you do that yourself in my opinion - You are the master of the superlative whether it be music, TV shows, food or whatever. your argument to my observation would be "that's not mediocre, that's great"

You criticize people (like me) for being critical only when they are critical about something you like or say.

You have mellowed since 1999, you are Mr Nice Guy and you're only controversial when it gets personal and you dislike someone for other reasons - you're scared to tell a 'nice' person they suck to their face.

Balls enough for you ?

You say I rave about everything but I do not, n fact you hate when i rave about anything at all. You also go thru phases where you are negative about everything.

You're right that I don't speak out as often as I used to. I don't see any reason to tell a person they suck to their face unless their high opinion of their music is actually impeding their growth as an artist which is pretty uncommon. However I feel someone out there has to provide some balance to all the endless positivity, everything is not just good.

Opinions are like ball sweat. No one cares about it but the guy whose balls are sweaty. I know that no one gives a shit about my opinions but still there are times when I must interject. Usually I try to keep my interjections pointy and worthy of musician scrutiny. But I do enjoy reading other peoples opinions. Even when they differ from my own, I like to see where people are coming from and try to understand their positions from their own perspective. Not saying that I am always successful at that undertaking but I do get some very revealing moments from reading the perspectives and opinions of others. Sometimes, I even find little golden nuggets of wisdom there. Other times I find little dingle berries of shit there. But whatever I find becomes a permanent fixture in the data field I try to pass off as a mind. One thing I know for sure is there are an awful lot of people who are way smarter and knowledgeable than me. So, why wouldn't I try to listen and learn from them? The pursuit of knowledge leads one to many conclusions contrary to the opinions of the masses. That is because the masses are controlled by controlled stimuli and have very little self discovered knowledge. For instance, a loyal watcher of Fox News is bound to repeat various elements of Fox news terminology and data that they have heard over and over again. They truly believe that everything they hear there is factual and real. I have talked to several of these people and the brainwashing is so evident and clear. Many of them still believe that Obama was not born in the USA and that he is a Muslim. I have come to the conclusion that many people believe the shit that they want to be true just because they want it to be true. These people have fake wisdom because of the illegitimate sources that they get their information from. Fake wisdom is quite a problem in these days where people think that if they see something on the internet it has to be true. So, in my opinion, seeking information and giving input based on the information you receive is a good thing. As long as you have verified your sources and confirmed their legitimate expertise. Opinion based on personal experience is the most valuable kind. In that sense I would assume that any opinions you may have musically are taken very seriously by your peers. I see negative critiques as a bridge to improvements. I try to decipher the golden nuggets and use that information to better myself or my songs. If someone had not told me that my shit sounded like shit I would never have taken the time to learn to make it better. This is the undertaking that we all should be working every day of our lives. The pursuit of getting better! We get better by learning better things, better ways and better perspectives, The key to wisdom is not having in depth knowledge but in understanding how the things that you know work in relation to others and a variety of situations. There are many teachable moments in life. Learning from them gives one a head start on the rest of the pack. But, we must be careful that we don't overstep any boundaries of knowledge yet to be gained. The human mind (especially in men) has a way of convincing us that we have superior intellect and all that egotistical crap. Once this happens the bulshit gets very deep. But the need for critical opinions in music and other elements of life is crucial to keeping the standards high, productive and genre evolving.

I've never been a person to exaggerate, it inhibits improvement.

If you get a reputation for elevating mediocre to wonderful, your opinion become meaningless, even a joke when they show your ignorance, poor taste, shallowness etc.

Some people are taken in by compliments and over zealous pathos, while others are suspicious of serial pollyannas and apple-polishers.

Most people believe what they want to believe and won't believe a truth if it goes against what they believe.

I'm totally the person that only gives positive reviews. But that's because I don't see the point in posting at all about music that doesn't move me. Maybe I'm missing the point .... maybe the music I hate, I just don't get .... I don't feel qualified to hand down negative opinions about such a subjective and personal thing as music that artists write. I feel more than qualified to say what I like, so that's what I do. That doesn't mean that there's not some stuff people post that I think sucks haha.

Scott, this is the real me.lol as if you didnt know, look you and i carry around some huge chips on our shoulders, I admit that I do and from my perspective, so do you, a number here have some issues, some more then others, the fact is you are going to get nowhere here, cause no one wants to deal with your ongoing thing and hanging this punching bag up and start slamming away at it. We just dont need it here.

I deal with the positive reviews and sometimes make suggestions very rarely to groups or people on what to improve upon.

I been doing enough of this listening here and elsewhere and with artists I promote, for a long time and get paid damn good for doing it, I only take the few people these days and am not doing it as often due to other commitments

I will never tell an artist their music sucks, or tear them down, I may make some suggestions or ideas of those who asks for my support and advocacy to pitch them to radio or offer publicity services.

I will and have offered suggestions in private, and say at this time i cant help them out. I have told a few performers their songs were needing some massaging and improvement, and a few have returned and i have assisted them.

One fellow Sean Poluk is one I have worked with in the past who has made substantial improvement over the years. He is now charting at roots music report and various radio stations. Not my doing, it is his music, but I have the contacts, and rely on the people to at least take a listen to his music, now why do they do that? Because I have built relationships with them the past 15 years. Am I boasting ,yes i am, because it took me years to build these contacts and connections

I think what is need here is a change of attitude, a change in the culture, which is something i see being done by a few good station managers of late, those with great ideas and interesting station concepts, perhaps it is time for you to look at things from a different approach and do the same and help build this, you have some good ideas and brought this place a long long ways , no one else could have done what you accomplished here rebuilding this Brand, but lets let go of the past. the 1999 thing. It is over, it is past it is gone. look to the future, not the past

Bryon, the problem we seem to be having on this thread is that you interpret my opening blog as meaning that I'm calling out for people to attack other people's music. Perhaps read it again and note that this is not the case. All I'm trying to do is reinforce an awareness that for the big picture to be real at all, the arena needs to be about more than everybody pumping everybody up no matter what. I like to think that our community is more evolved than to be simply facebook gladhanding 24/7.

None of the point I'm trying to make has anything to do with me having a chip on my shoulder. I'm just trying to make folks think about angles they may not have considered, no apologies on my end. If I didn't think this was an important idea, i wouldn't have posted it, and I feel my intentions are true enough that if this idea caused anyone any discomfort, they generated that themselves cause it wasn't coming from my efforts. No I don't expect anyone to start being more aggressive in their reviews, I just was elaborating on the kind of enlightened environment we're trying to provide.

point taken and acknowledged. Although some will carry on as if nothing happened after this. a handful will consider your thoughts Scott, not that it will change anyone's mind or how they do things here in "music critiquing" or having an opinion or laying down how they really feel about someones music. I know where I stand, and I aint changing ,although I am not involved in station managing much anymore and wont be, done enough of it ,good on those willing to step up and take time to do so. tip my hat off to them, they are a precious few.

OI get messages and request from people to come check out their music all the time. I usually go and check it out. If it is not up to par I point out the things that need to be corrected. If it really good I say that. I believe that honesty is a virtue in some cases. So often, people have been pumped up by family and friends who say they are great just because they love them. However, when they get out into the deep waters where the big fish are they get trounced because of the false perception that they are great. That is why I believe that it is unfair to the artist to keep saying they are making great music when it has obvious flaws. You are only setting them up for a rude awakening later. A wise friend once told me that it is no what you say but how you say it that counts. Musicians are very sensitive creatures and their talents need to be nurtured and cultivated. So, I try to take diplomatic approach by pointing out the positives first and then I give them the negative feed back in small doses. The point is that I try to build people up and that may require a few omissions about their work until they get up to snuff. So yes, positive reinforcement is extremely important for artists. Especially new artists that have not been through the performance ringer yet.

I got to feeling the role of artist doesn’t sit well with the role of critic for me. I just mostly make music.

But if I like something, it’s not too tough to say. If I don’t like stuff, I’m not much into playing critic anymore.

If someone explicitly asks me for the truth the whole truth nothing but the truth, then maybe.

We bush league musicians need a separate critic squad, but no one wants that job. No pay, no thanks.

That’s what we get for being junior league- or it’s what we don’t get.

Interestin' dialogue, all.

Happened to catch a movie "Gold Diggers," from 1933, last night. Not only does it touch on "show biz" (and the arts) in a comedic but pithy way, and the "cheap and vulgar" showgirls vs. "decent society", embodied by a couple supra-wealth snobs, who end up marrying the show girls, after many twists and turns, the movie ends with a song "My Forgotten Man", (below). Rememberin' the veterans...

Here's a musician with impeccable credentials, with a strong view on rap music, and culture.

Wynton Marsalis on Rap Culture: "You Can’t Have a Pipeline of Filth Be Your Default Position"
Hip-hop's impact on American culture, the trumpeter tells the Washington Post, is "more damaging than a statue of Robert E. Lee."

By Matthew Oshinsky | May 22, 2018 | 1:33pm

Pulitzer Prize-winning trumpeter Wynton Marsalis has never been a fan of hip-hop, something he’s made repeatedly clear in his three-decade career as America’s foremost spokesman for jazz culture. In an interview this week with the Washington Post, Marsalis weighed in on the current states of black culture, hip-hop and jazz, positing that rap music has had an overall negative impact on the country, and that recent events that have put the issue of race in the spotlight, including last year’s Neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Va., are less significant to the culture at large than what he calls the “pipeline of filth” produced by rap and hip-hop.

“You can’t have a pipeline of filth be your default position and not have it take a toll on society,” he told the Post’s Jonathan Capehart on an episode of Capehart’s podcast, Cape Up. “It’s just like the toll the minstrel show took on black folks and on white folks. Now, all this ‘nigger this,’ ‘bitch that,’ ‘ho that,’ that’s just a fact at this point. For me, it was not a default position in the ’80s. Now that it is the default position, how you like me now? You like what it’s yielding? Something is wrong with you; you need your head examined if you like this.”

Marsalis has long addressed racism and its deep roots in America culture in his music. In 1997, he became the first jazz musician to win the Pulitzer Prize for music with “Blood on the Fields,” a musical reflection on slavery. He’s also written pieces called “Black Codes (From the Underground),” which won two Grammys in 1986, and “From the Plantation to the Penitentiary.” He’s currently working on another examination of America’s struggle with racism, a commission titled “the ever-funky lowdown,” which homes in on negative perceptions of black culture that have been generated by mass white culture and, in some ways, parroted by black artists themselves. Jazz, Marsalis tells Capehart, is his way of addressing racial dynamics and progress at any given time in history.

“My words are not that powerful,” he said. “I started saying in 1985 I don’t think we should have a music talking about niggers and bitches and hoes. It had no impact. I’ve said it. I’ve repeated it. I still repeat it. To me that’s more damaging than a statue of Robert E. Lee.”

Asked about some of the most prominent voices in hip-hop today, Marsalis delivered a mixed assessment. He’s unimpressed with Kanye West and his recent foray into right-wing politics, dismissing West as little more than a salesman (“The quality of his thought is in the products he makes”), but more encouraged by Childish Gambino’s new political short film, “This Is America,” saying he applauds Donald Glover’s “creativity and what he’s doing.”

You can listen to the entire interview here

The main point seems to be that creative expression and realization is the connection music lovers cry out for. The ancient, heavenly connection... After that, when you start comparing, that's where it's easy to be a-stumblin'.

'our hopes and expectations,
black holes, and revelations...'
U2

The revelatory power of music is where it's at, not comparing. Run your own race, and keep peace with the music gods, so to speak, and all will be well. So, Express yourself, be true to thyself, and 'thou cannot be untrue to any other man.'

I don't think this is about comparing one song to another. Even though musical tastes are subjective, everyone has their own standard for what is quality music and what isn't for them. That's nothing we need to run away from.

I stopped giving real "opinions" on the review channel because all people want there is for you to kiss their ass. If you have criticism then screw you is the answer. So now I don't bother taking my time developing thoughtful detailed reviews because people here get their panties in a bunch if you don't tell them their shit smells like roses. Tell you what folks go get your shit review by real A & E reviewers they will tear you to shreds and you have to pay them to do it.
At least I'm free and not as nasty as the A & E people are those guys will eat you alive don't believe me try it yourself. Just see how much ass kissing the A & E guys give you the answer will be none.

90% isn't "everything". In every genre you have to wade through a lot of garbage to find music that is well-written, well-played, properly arranged, and recorded beautifully. In most instances you are lucky to cover two out of four.
