The 2020 Golden Kayak Awards are here! Please read, everybody..
ok the first thing you need to know about the 2020 Golden Kayak Awards is we're basically doing it identically to how we did it before.
Some of the genres like before are combined due to a smaller amount of songs in their categories and because we don't want the awards show to go on forever. :) We reserve the right to combine and/or eliminate categories if nominees for any category are scarce.
I'll say upfront that just as it is patriotic to participate when your country has a national election, I implore you to do your part for indiekind. It may not be the most pleasant thing for you to contemplate who amongst your peers had good songs in this past year but we ask you to spend a little energy, whatever you can spare, chiming in for this worthwhile cause. As far as we know it's the only indie awards show of this kind and I feel it's the best and most real one because the results are generated by the artists themselves, along with the active listeners, a society we call the IAIA - International Academy of Independent Artists.
Eligibility - Anyone who was a member up to the time this was published/emailed can send one nomination email (and one vote email once the ballot comes out). If you have multiple pages you can still only send one of each. It helps if you use the email listed as your contact email to send so we can verify.
Songs eligible are those that were uploaded between 11-11-19 and 11-10-20. You can tell if a song is eligible by going to that song's songpage and to the right it will say when the song was created on the site. If you nominate songs that are outside the eligibility period, those songs will not be eligible to make the final ballot. Please take a minute to check this with every song you nominate. There's always one or two of you who turn in a ballot with all ineligible songs which makes extra work for us.
Anyway you can nominate one item in each of 26 categories, Cut and paste the list below and put your member name at the top so we can easily check eligibility. No member name, we don't process. You can't nominate any song you took part in creating and any song I'm involved in is ineligible as well. Don’t waste a nomination on Negative Tendencies because I am ineligible. We ask that you don't fill your nominations with a list of your friends but rather let quality of song be the criteria. Put the name of song and the name of artist in the appropriate genre. In combined categories like Ambient and Classical, you can nominate one song for either category but not both. You can leave some of the categories blank if you want in your nominations email. One thing/stipulation we're adding this year: If we get any of these nomination sheets where somebody basically sent it to nominate one act, we're throwing those out, it's not real participation from our vantage point. People get their friends to nominate all their songs and any super-halfassed effort like this will not be included. This is not about selfish interests but about musical posterity so be true to the music please.
Also if you want to ask folks to nominate you or someone else you're a fan of on the pipeline, you can do that, no problem at all.

Send your nominations email to indiemusicpeople3@gmail.com, they must be in by 12 AM PST 12-11-20. Please get the email address right on this cause every year we end up finding several emails sent to the wrong address.
Genres used must be main genres that artist chose. If you see an odd genre, hold cursor over that and you'll see the main genre you're working with.
When nominations are all in (by Dec 11th), a ballot will be created, probably by 1-1-21. Musicology Dept. will help with this as there will be many songs with just one nomination. Each category on the ballot will have 4 to 7 songs in it. Then you will have 2 weeks to vote for whoever.
Any weird shit like songs where the artist changes genres in the middle or ballots we can't verify and so on will be thrown out of the competition.
If there is a final tie in the voting (on final ballot), there's no tie-breaker, both or all 3 songs will get the Kayak.
When competition is done there will be an On Demand Awards Show to announce the winners which will also be provided to our affiliate stations. There are no prizes except for a banner on your page and a permanent listing on the Golden Kayak Wall of Fame. The results and radio show will deliver a substantial amount of exposure to the winners. The tentative date for the awards show is January 10th but that is subject to change.

Sometimes an artist has a song on their page that they assign to a genre that isn't listed on the ballot. For instance if they say the song is "synth pop" can we vote on it in the "pop" category? How much flexibility do we have as far as genres are concerned? If an artist says their song is "rock", can we vote on it in the "classic rock" genre and so on.

A question.
Are Hard Alternative – Industrial/Beat Rock – Punk/Emo/Ska - three separate categories, or are they one combined category? I ask because the three genres are on one line.
I'm going to treat it like three separate categories.

I'm also pleasantly surprised that four of my songs were nominated for Best Song Of The Year:

Indie Music People is the only website that I have chosen to show my work. Everything I need is right here, supportive colleagues and friends, a beautifully designed site that is easy for non-techies like me to navigate, the best sound quality of any music site online, a management composed of human beings, not robots, and so much more.
The talent displayed here makes me work harder. The validation I've received over the years makes me strive to be worthy of that positive feedback. I've also enjoyed giving support to others. My work is not the center of my universe. There is plenty of life on planets other than my own and I'm always inspired to explore those worlds. I hope that some of what I do inspires other artists as well.
Not every song of mine is as good as I want it to be but not from a lack of trying. Sometimes I get lucky and the elements come together like lights on a Christmas tree and the kind words from members are the gifts under the tree. All I can say is thank you for making me a better person and better artist. You've helped me through some difficult times.
I live to express my feelings through music. Interacting with all of you has been a life changing experience for me and a source of hope. I try to infuse every song I write with a sense of hope even in the sad songs. Life is unsustainable without hope and at times hope seems to be in short supply. But the camaraderie and friendship I've found here has given me hope in my darkest hours. If my songs have helped anyone in any way - then I have fulfilled my purpose on earth. And when I'm gone, perhaps some of my songs will live on. That would be my fondest dream.
Congratulations to everyone who was nominated for a Golden Kayak Award. No matter how it turns out - you're all winners!!
