Why should anyone make music if there's no longer a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?

This is a question I receive often from my artist clientele. My answer is there's only one reason to do it, because you enjoy it.

Wow, first time for everything. We actually agree on that.

YOU "ARE RIGHT"(correct)...

The proverbial “pot of gold” is the essence of what it is that you have “produced”.

“Value” does NOT mean “Money”...

Value is instead “Satisfaction”...

Like unto that “satisfying feeling” one acquires after having had an orgasm...

This is just an analogy of course...

But tis true non-the-less. ; )

Gold is overrated...
No matter the size... a happy audience is priceless. Creating something and putting it out into the world and getting a response... (preferably a constructive one)
That and your own enjoyment is the real purpose in making music imo.
And yeah sometimes just for your own ego...;-)

Gosh you really are a wise dude, Jeff.

Gold is indeed over-rated.
And in my opinion, not even a good reason to have
decided to make music in the first place.
Not that it is not a motivation to some; but that's the rub right there.
If your aim is to make music, you do it 'cause it's in you to come out.
If your aim is to get rich through music, you're already a salesman, not an artist.

The Beatles thought the money was an inspiration,
at least Paul is known for having said it was an inspiration
to be making all that money. But I think he was young and didn't realize,
that if someone had just handed him a satchel of cash, and nobody
liked his latest record, he would not be terribly happy about that.

It IS nice to have somebody, anybody, tell you they enjoyed
a record you made. I do love when that happens.

I got into music, because I felt it was my Destiny,
and also 'cause I had a vision that
I was gonna be the New BEATLES, basically....

and okay it's taken some twists and turns,
including, my band has two old (and arguably dead, but they're still pretty good)
Beatles in it, (that would be BEATLESEX, I channel John and George, up to speed?)

but even while I kept telling my wife
(a thing which haunts me)
that we'd 'make it someday'....
and she died before I could ever 'make it',
and still haven't 'made it' though now I don't give a flying spitball
about 'making it'....

it is still now, and always really was,
all about making music that I can be happy I made.

Ego is as over-rated as gold is, ultimately...

Like, I just put out two records, they're quite good,
but outside of tell people there's a new record or two,
the biggest thrill was still making them.
I like makin' 'em.

What two records?
"WORLD WITHOUT LOVE" by American Lesley Jane

those two... just put 'em out...

Believe it or not, we recorded both of those yesterday.
Might take the day off to veg in front of a movie or two I think.
Unless I get an idea in me head, and then, it's off to the studio.

I am deeply thankful and grateful I can do this.
It's really the only thing I CAN do.

music and the money side of it dont blend well anyway, those that do music just to get money wont keep it goin for long, as passion is the driver, and that passion cant be bought with money.

Well that may be mostly true but I can tell you I've seen very talented people fade from Indieland cause of the difficulty of the dream. There would be a lot more good songs out there if there was some conceivable way to make it by doing recordings, I think.
