the accumulation of one's soul

Every experience we have in this life becomes part of the baggage we carry around, forever. Unless we have brain damage or Alzheimers or some sort of memory defect it's always there, a burden, or a resource. A friend who was an artist said his songs were like a uniform he wears around every minute of his life, they don't grow old and tired, they're always a part of him that others can be exposed to.

So where does one turn when they want no part of their past? When ones experiences are like a vast chain of remembers that choke? What if you can't live with yourself and who you were anymore? At a certain point there are no fresh starts, there is no changing.

I love my baggage. and the thing is, it is light easy to throw around and brings good memories when I think about my past. sure there are some instances that were challenging or perhaps not the best, but overall, for me, I embrace the now, look to the future and carry the experiences that have made me who I am. So, no, no regrets

Well thinking this through with my feeble mind if one is feeling that they are being hamstrung, or impeded by their past, that would require a professional to help one through this hopelessness or lack of feeling stuck in the mud. imp shrink may have some suggestions. Very few here can truly offer advice or ways to work through it, although perhaps some have experienced what you have and have overcome the heaviness of their past that is holding them back or to go forward. Sorry for your pain
I have no answers ,others may

What are the alternatives?

- you call yourself names and beat yourself up like a masochist

- you ruminate constantly hoping that it might come out differently in your head

- you accept that you can't change who you are or what you've been

- you carry on as best you can until a better mood comes along (they usually do)

I find a good Mantra helps, something you can repeat to yourself whenever you feel the old 'Black Dog' following you :)

Something like "I don't have time for this crap now" or "My past mistakes will guide me, not define me.
