Album on here
Sorry, I've forgotten the name. Scott sent round an email about putting out albums in IMP. How does it work? Have any of you done it? Any sales?

I've sold some, and we've had a lot of sales for a couple different charity DMDs. The 2 advantages to selling your music at IMP are

1. We take no commission
2. The DMD is probably the best packaging available ever for a digital CD because you can create this special ultra page that works as a sort of album booklet and expand your product as an artist.

See this link for an example of what you might be able to do with an ultrapage.

and there is more info here. http://indiemusicpeople.com/dmds.aspx

these days I just do singles, it's easier,

a little while back, BEATLESEX did do an album
for old times sake (we used to do them all the time, probably made over 100)
and we made a station of that album, so maybe you could do that.
as another avenue to getting people to hear it,
I figure the more they hear it, better your chances are they'll buy it.

God Bless, Much Love, ~L

Well you need more then a place to park your work. cdbaby and tunecore have better ways of getting your works out there, by meta tags, song description placement at different genres, but the big thing is you have to market your works, promote it, use facebook and twitter and other social media to pitch your songs, parking it here is ok, but it aint gonna generate the sales unless you the artist know how to get it happening in the world, fine to have it here for free , yet one has to dig down and develop a fan base and following. and the best way is selling your music in eps or cds out playing ,although these days, people do well with out that. I would recommend having some one helping you Francesca, an advocate, pitching your music, I did that for years for one band gratis, but then afterwards developed my work into a business. now I have someone doing all the heavy lifting for me. and they use various ways and means I dont know of, cause they know the streaming biz, digital is the way, cds hard copies, not so much, except at shows. there is much more, I have books I read when I first started to learn it, but it was fly by the seat of your pants and work late long hours helping others get their vibe out there, nice though IMP offers it for free, to sit here and for those few who have been fortunate enough to have good songs and drive traffic here, that is key, its all about building a following and listeners. way different landscape in this day and age

may I add, that more and more as time marches on, people are listening and streaming songs at work on their work stations, or at home, or in their car or while they are walking. and the thing is some places pay the artist for the streams they get, as many of you know already on the various platforms. so honestly, it is worth it these days to build a following where you can get coin for people who will stream your tunage. I know a number here will verify that and agree with me. selling cds, I think is going the way of the dodo bird. although some still like to hold that thing in their hands, but expensive for artists to do. art, mastering production engineering all that takes a chunk out of ones pocket, although there are masters here who do it just fine without going to a recording studio. but funding and getting your music on cd, I just wont do it anymore, too much money, especially sending out to radio, I use wetransfer dropbox to get my works to radio, its a digital world my friends, and download your tunes from wherever. I track mine at both tunecore and cdbaby, and the streaming , they provide real time insights to countries, genre, plays things like gender, who is listening, how many times. tracking it ,so those frankly are the places that will help you the most. there you can assess where you are doing well and who is listening and you can target your audience. my 2 pennies of what I am doing these days

I tried CD Baby and got no extra business. Seems to me these places are for artists that intend to sell thousands and then, 1 out of 4 dollars go to them. Bandcamp is similar, I still have some music there, sold a CD a month or so ago and couldn't believe the piece they took.

Sure Scott, but I wont do a cd anymore, I burn them if radio wants them , or if someone wants one, but that is so old school those days are long gone and done, toast, sure sell out of the back of your van or at parties or shows , performances. i did that, not anymore, I dont play out,

lets get a grip here on how things are going, albums hard copies, more and more people, listeners. are using digital. bottom line, I can track my plays, how many where when genre gender countries. I get a whole snapshot of where they are getting played how many times which songs, in an analysis where it shows me how I am doing, and the streams that are making me 2-3 pennies a stream, and when they get in the 1000s it adds up, per song, and plus the other streams elsewhere like deezer, spotify is freaking huge, as is deezer, lets throw in itunes apple and the other platforms, then there are the digital sales, then the royalties, then the licensing of ones songs. I am fortunate that I had someone fluke across my FB page and check my stuff out, fortuitous indeed. So luck and good music I guess, people looking to make a buck themselves. and they take a percentage, its the way things work, its business people. learn the business. find ways to learn about how it works, but for me, I do some promo for others, in the area of expertise I have developed, but frankly, I think I will leave it to the younger hip crowd to work their magic for me

Yes I got ya but for me I prefer elsewhere as I don't think I get downloads here. The places I mentioned are the ones I feel who can do me justice plus they have better technology for tracking giving up to date reports plus streaming is where it's at elsewhere there we as artists get paid . I love imp for the people relationships I have built and collabs it has its place for sure but it will never make me money .sound greedy maybe but I w ant results now and it can only be delivered elsewhere.those are the cold hard real facts. Imp can't provide realtime updates as I pointed out nor is it going to pay for streams.

well I get that you seem determined to talk people out of using our DMD but it's a basic fact that if an artist brings someone here interested in the music, the buyer will not only get a better product but the artist will take a bigger piece of the sales price.

well, if I may,

it seems to me, the more the more the merrier...

why not sell a DMD format release here,
and also get on whatever other formats are available out there...
you're young, lots of energy, I say go for it, CD Baby, Amazon,

whatever and whoever, and if Bryon has some experience
with successfully selling his music, well that means
a voice of experience...

I didn't hear him actually say anything against our DMD feature,
I just hear him saying 'get as many irons in the fire as you can'...

Our DMD feature absolutely rocks, is state of the art coolness,
and that having been said, if you are young, which you are,
and have the energy for it, which I assume you do

(Bryon has the energy for it, God Love him! me, I just make 'em,
I like makin' 'em, record after record, the fun is in the doing for me)

then, why not get your album every place you can,
and sell it through every possible avenue.

God Bless.

~L

Bryon it's a better product because of the ultrapage.

The thing about CD baby and such is that they're expensive services, indie music doesn't sell a lot of product by its very nature. I mean 49 dollars a record, it's just a lot to put out. Then you have all kinds of limitations. Jilly and I sold our CD there, we changed the bandname and they wouldn't let us change that for starters. On top of that because the way it works we had to charge 5 dollars more than we would've normally cause of their structure.

Sure the page rocks, but is that going to sell records ,. an emphatic no. you could have a little link on a one pager describing ones product with proper meta tags and content description, but that too aint going to guarantee any sales. although if one has a following and you release songs on a regular basis, have a weekly connection and short info plug about what you are doing in your music world and songs coming up, keeping your audience engaged on Facebook that is key, also on the other social media, but for me its all about FB, that is where I am building my audience and following about my music, it is way way more then having a brilliant designed page here or anywhere.

It is a whole bunch of various things that enter into getting ones music out there

now as for the investment, well that is the reality, I will have far more success on cdbaby and tunecore then here, because I know I have people who follow me, and on spotify, I just really started doing this in February of this year, promoting marketing myself and my music, and its a slow build, but it is working, I am engaging people and building a fanbase, and frankly that is not going to happen here for getting ones music happening, now I do have people who like my music here, the stations are genius, brilliant. undeniably nothing like it anywhere, but that is not helping me at all. now maybe some it will. I am not a rock star, I dont do big productions, or very few of them ,I have my one mic and record my piano, and sometimes do more and send off works to other musicians to complete the proects and make them sound pretty cool. One thing I have learned and I am pretty good at it, is promotion. I just cant see it happening here, for me, maybe others think this is the cats ass, and I do like it, but as for generating income streams, aint gonna happen

How is sending them here to buy your music any different than sending them elsewhere?

The ultrapage is about giving the buyer more value. Don't know if you bought a lot of albums back in the day but I recall buying some like Captain Fantastic by Elton John that had this elaborate booklet with the record, that's what you can provide with the ultrapage.

I could, although uploading to cdbaby gets you to a ton of other places, especially spotify, as for cdbaby and tunecore they are aggregators ,get your tunes out to so many places. anyways , I am done discussing this, I do what i do, and where I do it.
