The best independent songwriter IMHO???

Probably not right to rate anyone is such a way but this one really moves me, her name is Serena Matthews. She writes some of the most beautiful and insightful music I've ever heard, she's the real deal.

And she was kind enough to give me permission to record one of her songs called "It's Too Quiet". The last one we recorded and the best one we ever did.., thank you again Serena.

"Madison"

https://www.reverbnation.com/serenamatthews/song/6025215-madison-hoquiam-cover

It's a cover but she really breaths life into what was a very rough demo by some Seattle band called Hoquiam.

And I met Venetia Everly at BMI in Nashville last spring (I bought her late Uncle Phil's car, that was the reason for the trip..) and I really did take the opportunity to push Serena's music on her, she really loved "It's Too Quiet" and hopefully that might matter someday, she's in Tennessee and she's a contender, now doubt about it. There's still only so much one person can do though, even if she is Don Everly's daughter.

You should encourage Serena to upload some of those tracks here.

Oh gee, there are so many. I find I tune into indie alternative bay area radio equal to classical rock stations these days, or moreso.

Here's an indie song I found/heard this week lol.

Gregg, you've always loved female artists, you might want to try some of these, they're all amazing, all joined us since 2016.

I recall this one Canadian gal who didn't have many songs but had an original called "Fill Me", just vocals, piano and strings, what a song that was. I recall she was working with some producer in LA and just disappeared.

Can't find that song anywhere, anyone remember it?

I'll check those singers out sometime but outside of classical and some opera, I don't listen to much else these days.

Yo Sterling,

You did a stellar job vocally, and with producing on "It's Too Quiet," added up to a couple of m'stations, you seem at home in the studio, do you do production work for a living?...

That's not me singing Steve, that's a friend of mine named Dwight, he did all the vocals for the songs requiring a male voice from about '99 to 2007, then I pulled him out of retirement to do the Serena - It's Too Quiet song a few years back. I sure wish I could sing like that but no such luck.

I wrote all the songs we recorded, did the arrangements, lyrics, that sort of thing. These days I run a small fleet of livery cars that take up most of my time so I'm not sure we'll be recording again though I'm not ruling it out completely. There is a lot of unfinished things I'd like to get completed but I won't do it like we did in the past. It'll only happen if I can book a solid month of studio time or more, and that won't be happening anytime soon.

Funny thing is, the Serena song "It's Too Quiet" is the only cover we did and the one I had the least input in and of course it turns out to be the best one we did, maybe there's a message in there somewhere. But if this is the last, I'm glad it ended on a positive note.

Somebody should also mention Jillianne Wright in this conversation who would be my personal choice as best indie songwriter.

This Francesca gal is very good, no doubt about it. And Jilly's a heavyweight, that I agree with. "Italy" is an incredibly beautiful song though my personal favorite is "Oh No Yoko.." That's another true classic.

Hi Scott and all! When I first started building my station here back in January it was very heavily loaded with females. When I got to the point of increasing my station from 37 to 103 songs I was thrilled to discover so many guys who matched the gals lyric by lyric and song by song in songwriting prowess!

Wow; to pick the best indie songwriter is such a personal and subjective thing, that for me it is virtually not possible! Since you listed many of the lovely ladies, I have a list of my fave blokes and gonna put these in alphabetical order by last name:

Steve April
Ben Elliot
Hugh Hamilton
Sean Lenox
David Nyro
Richard Scotti
Scott Stambaugh
Bryon Tosoff
Edward Williams

Thanks for the mention! I doubt any artist here would put me on that list.

Other guys who should be on it are Steve Ison, Azwel, and Bob Elliott for starters.

I was pleased with it. The interview was a bit of a car crash, but good fun (wasn't asked about the supernatural though Scott, I was ready for a speech on the Loch Ness monster). No telling if anyone listened, but I will keep going!
