NEW ALBUM - But what genre is it?
Merry Christmas IMPies,

I've been busy away finishing off an album this year which I called Masquerade. (a href="https://spoti.fi/35NYAzs">I did an official release on Spotify a few days ago of all the songs in album form, but the reality is I've been uploaded a lot of the songs 'exclusively' here over the last year in some form or another. I'm in the process of uploading the last few that I only finished recently and updating my artist to page to try make it clear which songs are on the album.

BUT... I was hoping for some help from the IMP crew. Where-ever I've uploaded it, I've REALLY STRUGGLED TO PICK A GENRE, even when I get to create one myself. If anyone has any lazy boxing day time to have a listen or skip through Masquerade, I'd love to hear your thoughts on which genre it fits in to as an entire album. If you've listened to anything I've done before, you might be aware that it can be hard to pigeon-hole an individual song, but as a collection of 11 songs, I'm completely lost.

I hope you can help, and hope everyone has had and is having an amazing festive period.

If you've got a varied selection, when in doubt, call it alternative.

FT provides good advice here Ben, I go with that. makes a lot of sense. I will follow you and check you music out I am at the spot too although spend more time here and I have featured you Ben on the stations I have here at IMP, where I feature many artists who frequent indiemusicpeople.com

The whole genre thing is very subjective. Basically, you are the best person to decide this question. Chances are that if a song has drums, bass and electric guitar - then the genre name probably has the word "rock" in it. Classic rock, modern rock, alt rock
southern rock, 60's rock, pop rock, folk rock, well you get the idea! What do most of the songs have in common? Take that adjective and add the word "rock" to it! If you created 11 songs, you can create a genre name for them. They're the genre you say they are.

Ok so don't pay me much mind, I am a sort of eternal bystander, just a regular guy with no talent, you know, the stinking public. However, I did actually listen to the album several times today. There is not one spot on the record that says alternative to me, I think to call it that is basically the same as calling it generic.

From front to back it says progressive to me, sure some tracks may lean soulful pop but even those, when taken in context with the rest of the album have a progressive slant. I liked the dark cabaret elements quite a lot, I generally shy away from the electronic elements but on this record they fit like a glove. To make the smooch fest complete I will further state that the vocals are perfect, I enjoyed them with muchliness.

Great album, it will surely be in rotation for a while and I will see what your catalog has to offer. Good job.

Thanks everyone. There's some good thoughts here and I can see the thread going deeper in to the question of 'what is a genre'.

FT, I do always tend to go with the 'alternative' for the reasons you stated, depending on what song it is just depends on what suffix I use. Alternative to me means, a bit different. So if I categorise a song as 'alternative rock', I'm saying it's a rock songs that's a bit different.

But that doesn't exactly guide anyone significantly so I also agree with you jingo. And thank you for listening and your comments. I'd not really considered 'progressive' before, mostly because I don't think I really knew what it meant. But how you described the album makes it make sense. I was wondering if you'd mind if I used your second paragraph as a review of sorts? Let me know if you can.

And Byron, thanks for your input too. You've always been super supportive of all my endeavours so thank you for that. Youve made me realise also that although I listen a lot to imp at work, making a station to showcase the favourite songs I come across would be a great way to show my support.

Actually, given the current political climate, if we're gonna down the defining a Brit route we should probably move this to the Political Pipeline

Just an anecdote about choosing genres - at mp3.com I often used the genre Leftfield under Alternative cause it seemed to fit the best, til I came up with a suggestion for the perfect genre title for Father Time which was Alternative Retro!

When we first started this site you could name your own subgenre which I loved and wished it hadn't somehow gotten eliminated in updated site codings, would still like to get that back someday.
