The Kayak List began on October 8th, 2004. A very small panel of musicologists put it together but there was one common belief, that the music we were featuring was better than what was currently in the new releases bin of our local record stores. Back then there were a lot more record stores. You would think that indies would've been more prevalent in filling the void but I'm not sure they have been. In September of 2009, the site (IAC) started to drop many of its flagship features including the Kayak chart. When IACmusic became IndieMusicPeople.com in May of 2015, we brought back the Kayak Big 25 - this time using station adds along with the musicologists to determine song placement. There's no doubt that the new music by indies in this era is just as good and perhaps better than it was back then. Either way, there's a great history to Kayak, it's probably the only institution of its kind that heralds the vast group of online indie artists. If you add up all the great artists who have populated Kayak, you have an era of music that lives up to past greatness.
