I had known Mac for many years…and I never knew him to have an easy go of things right out of the box. Maybe 10 years ago he had some trouble relative to selling cocaine. His co-workers at the post office took to calling him Miami Mac, while his lawyer (a known marijuana user) got enough continuances that Mac’s charges were eventually dismissed. Mac told me all this, and I never did inquire whether he was actually guilty.
I saw Mac again maybe 5 years later (I don’t get over that way often), and he had a pretty gal to hang out with who was the daughter of a local cop-I felt happy for Mac taking a swing at a miss and connecting. Several months later I saw Mac and learned his gal had taken up with someone else…he looked at me a second time in the eye. That stuck with me until the next summer when I asked where Mac had been, and learned he had died-“everything inside of him stopped.”
So I wrote this song.
