Bushes is a pop-driven keyboard heavy track with lots of harmonies. London takes us through the feelings of co-dependence, hurt, anger and the hopelessness of ending or continuing the relationship. The highlight of the track in the fast rap-like singing in the bridge that begins over video game sounds sung from the guy’s point of view, and the follow-up section is sung from the girl’s perspective.

I started writing the song over 10 years ago when I was living in the University District neighborhood of Seattle. My room was a colorful mural. I was in an on again and off again relationship with a guy named Matt. I don't know how many times we broke up and got back together. I was so scared to show who I was and reveal my secrets to someone knew. I was scared to imagine my life without him. I would stay home some weekends in a terrible mental loop obsessing over things that had happen. I couldn't forgive him and I couldn't move on. I didn't fit into his lifestyle and I wasn't doing much with my music. I was drinking a lot. Smoking a lot. He did drugs. I couldn't really handle doing drugs with him and his friends. They all had better tolerances than me. I was not cool and they were. I wasn't good at socializing like them. I didn't grow up in the city and it showed. I didn't belong with him but I desperately wanted to. Over the years, I added the bridge to the song because I wasn't quite done describing the relationship in the song. Around that time I changed the lyrics to make me the narrator of the song. Enough time had passed that I could look at the relationship from a far and the people in it seemed more like strangers than me and him. I want this song to inspire people to leave a bad relationship if they are in one or pat themselves on the back for leaving one!
She went down to paint the news there was no more news to paint
She went down to play the blues all the blues they had already been played
He’s so tired of being abused by himself almost every single day
She’s so tired of being used and not saying the words she needs to say
It's a long way down
Breaking up is too much pain
It's a long way out of the bushes so they do it all over again
She’s not much of an actress but she’ll fool you
Knows all of the words she needs to say
In this scene she is magic she is fool proof
Hold her close and hope she never goes away oh no
He’s got all of the money and the right moves
He’s got all of the jokes he’s got the brains
It's a long way down
Breaking up is too much pain
It's a long way out of the bushes so they do it all over again
He say you don't gotta tell me all your secrets they already got put on blast
If you don't wanna regret this later then girl please don't hold back
You got your pen in your hand but your head where’s it at You can’t even do your own thing
All you do is worry bout me
I separate you leave you lonely make you feel like you don’t know me
I’m gonna be throwing more parties when you come through you’re so boring bring a friend so you don’t annoy me
You got no plans and I got plenty got my art school and my savings you ain’t rapping you ain’t singing what the heck you even thinking
Don’t seem it is your dream got in her head and she believed him contemplating getting even instead of just leaving
She said tell me why I can’t stop crying
Can’t stop the tape that plays on repeat inside my mind
Tell me why I can’t stop trying
I just can’t seem to forgive and I just can’t let him go
They don’t say anything by the light of the moon
They’re in the city other lights get in the way
They just won’t give it up haven’t they had enough had enough yeah
Oh they just won’t give it up haven’t they had enough
It's a long way down
Breaking up is too much pain
It's a long way out of the bushes so they do it all over again oh yeah
Yeah they do it all over again
Yeah they do it all over again
