Emile Millar

I wrote this song at 4AM after watching a documentary on John Lee Hooker and a CNN story about the war in Iraq. I fell asleep and woke up on the couch; this song was in my head. It's in open D because I kept trying to cop a bunch of blues licks and it was in that tuning when I picked up the guitar. The lyrics reflect a father and soldier who was killed in this fucked up war. Anyway, I went in the studio the next day and recorded this song - first take (with some over-dubs), I'm not that rad, or at all...whatever - you get the point. This is the first time I wrote about this song, I hope some one reads it.
It's great when the day is done
And america waves
Be gracious you're safe here son
Behind iron gates
Wintertime, the sun shines on your grave

It's great when the day is done
And the kids are in bed
You wash your face in the rain and wait for the sun
Summer's here, it's the middle of the year
The shade is on your grave and I can't read your name x

This is an emotional number that you can really feel. And it's an excellent performance, Emile! -M-

Sweeping and haunting. The best song about the ramifications of war that i have heard... A great tune.
