"Superficial Superman" plays off a classic comic book theme to tell the cynical, semi-autobiographical story of trying to cope in day-to-day life as a reluctant "hero" to others-- much less as a mere mortal. Note: This song was originally written in 1997--years before every other band in the world decided to get on the "Superman" bandwagon and write a similarly-themed song. I guess it was a great idea.
Superficial Superman
(By Jeff Hamm)

I'm your Superficial Superman
So tighten up my rubber band
And launch me into space.
Slap me in the face
I'm tick ticking like a time bomb waiting
To blow your mind.
I'm your Superficial Superman
And I don't really understand
The world we're in today.
There's no one left to save except myself.

Jimmy Olsin's screaming that I treat him so demeaning
Says I don't even know his name.
When I caught him kissing Lois Lane
I didn't care that it would kill him
If I punched him in the face.
Lois Lane's complaining that I couldn't stop a train
And that my building leaping days are through.
What am I supposed to do-
With all the problems that my x-ray vision
Can't see through?

It gets so depressing that I think I'd rather die.
Throw myself right out a window but I'd probably fly.
Tell me super baby baby we'll never be apart
With your kryptonite noose wrapped around my heart.

Perry White keeps saying that I'm always running late
And that I never get the story on time.
But I'm always at the scene of the crime
I'm under cover with my pad and pencil,
My cape and my boots.
Ma and Pa are worried cause I'm always in a hurry
And I never get to sleep at night.
Tell me how's a boy who's wearing tights
Ever supposed to meet a Wonder Woman
And get a life?

It's a little overrated to be the man of steel.
It's not the bullets that I mind it's the words that I feel.
Sometimes it gets so hard just to tell the lies from truth
When you’re living your life from a telephone booth.

Well I must confess, get this "S" off my chest,
And the burden that it carries each day.
How can I fly through Metropolis sky,
When the world is standing on my cape?

It’s getting harder on this daily planet…
You know it is x
