A song about the neighborhood where I grew up

Kendra Legare (words & melody)
Sky Michaels (music)

In my old neighborhood in the Bronx there was this steep hill, between the two grandma’s houses. One lived on the top of the hill and one at the bottom. We hated to walk up that steep hill. Well they’ve passed on and a few years ago I went back to the neighborhood and I was surprised to see that hill was just an incline…I guess there’s a big difference between 5’3” and 2’9”… but it was a real neighborhood, you know…not too many of those left today…yeah a neighborhood…

I remember the big hill between the two grandma’s house
In the summer we’d share the skates, jump on a book and slide down
In the winter the top of a garbage can would be our sled
We were the fastest in the land
But don’t complain if you bust your head

It was the neighborhood yeah
505 Calhoun good times gone to soon yeah
It was the neighborhood yeah
505 Calhoun good times gone to soon yeah

We could play outside at night
Hot peas and butter, come get your supper
Double Dutch till the evening came down
And if you got in trouble everybody took the blame
Everyone they knew your name, today it just isn’t the same

(chorus)

Bridge:

I want to teach my girl to play
All the games we used to play
All the rhymes we used to say
Give her a touch of yesterday
When it was safe for you to stay
In the neighborhood yeah

(chorus)

We could play outside at night
Hot peas and butter, come get your supper
Double Dutch till the evening came down
And if you got in trouble everybody took the blame
And everyone they knew your name
Today it just isn’t the same

Smooth and poignant, Kendra Legare expresses a vocal warmth combined with a touch of the nostalgic. Silky with a smooth groove, the story almost tells itself.
