A Christmas and Easter story

Lex Zaleta with help from Stu Weber's excellent book, TENDER WARRIOR

An open invitation to every living soul
THIS IS WHO I AM

She watches as he works the wood,
Watches his strong yet gentle hand
Turn that tree into something good,
And then into something grand.

Slowly she works up the courage
To learn a bit more about him.
She walks across that rainbow bridge -
Yes, she’s going out on a limb.

“Tell me, tall man, are you the kind
Of man whose heart and aim are true?
For you know they say love is blind -
See how I stumbled upon you.”

He smiles in admiration
Of this maiden so fine and fair,
Puts his hands into his apron,
And says, “Sweet Mary, I declare:

This is who I am;
This is what I do;
This is where I’m going;
Why don’t you come too?

This is who I am;
This is what I do;
This is where I’m going;
Why don’t you come too?”

Thirty years or so come and go,
And Mary sees a sadder scene.
A carpenter’s son that we all know
As Jesus, that Nazarene,

Hangs upon a wooden cross
Between two common thieves.
One is certain that all is lost;
The other truly believes.

The believer gets the courage
To learn a bit more about Him.
He calls across that rainbow bridge -
Yes, he’s going out on a limb.

“Tell me, holy man, tell me true,
Is this our final breath?
I beg you please take me with you
Beyond this world of death!”

Jesus smiles at this simple trust
From such a simple man.
“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
For those who don’t understand:

This is who I am;
This is what I do;
This is where I’m going;
Why don’t you come too?

This is who I am;
This is what I do;
This is where I’m going;
Why don’t you come too?”

With two rough boards and three crude nails,
God built that rainbow bridge for us;
And with a love that never fails
Jesus stands there to implore us:

“This is who I am;
This is what I do;
This is where I’m going;
Why don’t you come too?

This is who I am;
This is what I do;
This is where I’m going;
Why don’t you come too?”
