This is a demo of a song off of an acoustic record I have written and will be recording this winter. The record itself draws from and expands upon the ideas and characters from the film "The Truman Show." This particular version of the song was recorded and mixed by a fellow classmate and myself as part of a senior final project at Southern Illinois University.

Song written, arranged, and performed by Jason Barr
Lyrics by Jason Barr
Song engineered, mixed, and produced by Jason Barr & Junbum Kim

The idea of this song is really to try and encapsulate the struggle that is simply being yourself. In a world that sees you only as a marketing demographic, this is no easy task.

Our likes, our dislikes, what we wear, what we eat, the type of music we enjoy, what we watch on television...Our entire lifestyle is up for grabs and is high priority for marketing executives across the globe. I would like to think this song is simply a reminder that, as individuals, we are valuable and have worth. Regardless of our aforementioned tastes, in spite of our credit scores, we have an inherent worth that isn't up for grabs. This, to me, is a refreshing idea and worthy of discussion.

The title, "Circles," comes from the first verse lyrics...

"Machines like us just get disassembled...We're just last year's model to them"

These lyrics are in reference to the idea that, by breaking all of us up into target markets and demographics, marketers have a way of stripping us of our aforementioned inherent worth and making us feel quite disposable.

Cheesy, I know...
Sometimes our best just isn't good enough

The cycle begins
And you've got a lot of nerve
Even getting out of bed
'Cause you hit the nail right on the head
When you said
“Holding on is more than I can handle
Machines like us just get disassembled
We're just last year's model to them...”

Sometimes our best just isn't good enough

Self-respect is overrated
We don't fill your needs
We create them
Sometimes you just
Have to live a little

So here's how it is
So what's the point in even
Getting out of bed
When you hit the nail right on the head
When you said
“Runner-up is more than I can handle
Second place never gets remembered
We're just last year's model to them…”

Slow down
You're losing the spark
That makes who you are
“But no one knows reality like t.v.”
She told me
Sometimes things aren't like they seem

Sometimes you just have to live a little... x
