City girl meets country boy on a blind date. They get married, raise a couple of kids, and teach them what's important in life. Later on one of those kids writes a song about it, and hopes to impart a lesson...or at least garner a listen.

Jason Craig - Songwriting, Vocals, Guitars
Scott Parman - Bass
Ben Patel - Drums, Recording
Inspired by Eddie and Nancy...a couple of pretty remarkable people

I wrote this in about two hours on the day of my parents' 40th wedding anniversary. They say "you write what you know," and this song is a true story from start to finish. My dad's a Vietnam vet, we owned the general store in our tiny town until the farm crisis of the '80s, and I thank God for the lessons they taught us out "on the back 40."

She was a city girl he was a country boy
A blind date became their start
Wasn’t too long before he knew he had to win her heart
So he joked and charmed his way into her home and family
Then he drove her north to show her just how great their lives could be…

They got married but soon his country called him off to war
Stuck a half a world away from the woman he lived for
So when he returned their goal became to find a home for kids
Two sons later they moved north and that’s just what they did…
on the back 40

Hard work and honor, trusting your life in the Lord above
To laugh and cry and live and die with courage and with love
Cause the trials of life you go through end up as the ties that bind
And the road ahead is colored by the life you leave behind…
on the back 40
On the back 40

They settled in, ran the general store, worked 16 hours a day
Ten great years then the farmers left and they took that store away
But we learned a dime you earned was the only dime that you deserved
And we learned the best thing you could do was live your life to serve…
on the back 40

Hard work and honor, trusting your life in the Lord above
To laugh and cry and live and die with courage and with love
Cause the trials of life you go through end up as the ties that bind
And the road ahead is colored by the life you leave behind…
on the back 40
On the back 40

And the things that kept them going strong for these last 40 years
Are the things that kept us growing through the laughter and the tears
Now as I watch them playing in the yard with their grandkids
I look up to the sky and I thank God for all they did…

On the back 40 where we can raise our kids
On the back 40 I thank God for all they did
On the back 40
