Lots of saxophone and moody vibes

Words and music by Nigel Clothier

This is about a young person who’s grown up in an industrial city where the old businesses have been closed down. They need to move on to a new place to get a start in life. They’ve seen their father used, and in some ways exploited, by their employers over the years. Now the industry that he gave his working life to won’t provide employment to his children. The middle eight is a rejection of politicians who promise solutions but don’t deliver them. It’s also about keeping the old traditions and memories no matter where you end up in life.
The men who built the factories, who own this town
Brought you here for the skill in your hands
But if the money they’ve invested don’t bring them a yield
They’ll close the business and think you’ll understand
Now you’re too old to change the life you know
Too bitter and too choked to shout
Damned if I’ll get sucked down in the same old way
I’m young and angry and I’m gonna get out

Tonight’s the night I’ll run away, there’s no reason for me to stay
I wanna see the light of the day and make my own mistakes

When the suburbs are deserted, the shops are closed
I doubt the businessmen lose much sleep
But it’s the people who’re the heart and soul of this town
We got promises still to keep
They’ve torn down all the alleyways I ran along
When I grew up and learned how to feel
But they can’t the people or rewrite the past
And I won’t let them steal home from me

Tonight’s the night I’ll run away, there’s no reason for me to stay
I wanna see the light of the day and make my own mistakes

What we don’t need now is another hero with his cap in his hand
What we don’t need now is another dream of freedom in a foreign land

Old man they’ve crushed the life clean out of you
They’ve left you empty, you’re nothing but a shell
You know I’d rather see Satanic foundry flames
Become a ghost in this shadowy hell
So though it breaks my heart I’m gonna leave this town
Find a fortune all of my own
But I will carry off with me into exile
The memories of the place I call home

Tonight’s the night I’ll run away, there’s no reason for me to stay
I wanna see the light of the day and make my own mistakes
