A heavy, guitar-driven contemplation

Music/Lyrics/Singing/Playing/Focus Puller/Arranging/Record: Tom O'Brien

Was listening to Elliott Smith and thinking about his suicide and Kurt Cobain's and having been bipolar through much of my adult life. Many artists understand the beautiful pain. Some of us survive, others succumb.
It don't take drugs to get high
It don't take pills to get by
When your whole soul is laid bare
And all the scars you've got there
That you dug with your nails
Telling all your sad tales
Screaming swear words at God
Or whoever showed up

A crippling art
Like Smith and Cobain
A knife through the heart
A gun to the brain
Beautiful pain
Beautiful pain
Beautiful pain

When I fight with the muse
All too often I lose
I am clinching a fist
Lord, I can't play like this
So I've just got to yll
Cuz inside me it's hell
And it's heaven at once
And I'm stuck on the fence

Been feeling it since I was 12 years old
Never one to do what I was told
Angels fought with demons in my head
Wouldn't be at peace till I was dead

It tears you apart
But I can't complain
A knife through the heart
A gun to the brain
Beautiful pain
Beautiful pain
Beautiful pain x

The Good Stuff: VI
Excellent song. I would produce it a bit differently, but that does not detract from the fact that this is a really well-written tune. Good melody and I really like Tom's vocal delivery somewhere between Dylan and Petty. Nice. And well-deserved of its spot on the Hitline.

Addiction
The bittersweet addiction of the Muse.
