Epic tale of an unsung sidekick and a popular fast-talking hippie. :) Co-wrote this with my IAC buddy Sam, the Man with No Band.

Lyrics and Music by J. Patrick Sharpe and Sam (The Man with No Band)

Willie stood down on the banks of the Jordan
His smile was crooked and kind
And when folks saw him coming they would all point and say
“There goes Willie, he’s always one step behind”

One day he joined up with a rowdy old gang
They went fishin’ nearly every day
Until a fast-talkin’ hippie from Nazareth town
Came around to show them the way

When Jesus went preaching from town to town
The people found him hard to understand
So Willie he offered to stay behind
Battin’ clean-up for the Savior of Man

(Ch) It's one more village, one more town
One more soul to set free
One-Eyed Willie, one step behind
And he did one hell of a job

While the teacher was teachin’, Willie hung out in the back
To listen to the whispers of the crowd
He had a singular vision for the way things should be
And he shared it all dramatic and loud

Jesus told Willie that the end was approaching
That it was only a matter of when
He said, “God knows the mob has got a hit out on me
So I want you to stay behind again”

Willie knew exactly what all of this meant
His purpose was perfectly clear
And on the road to Damascus he met a fella named Paul
So he whispered the news in his ear (Ch)
