WHEN YOU FALL
Three old hags in a cave off a misty road
You saw them dancing round a cauldron of snake's tongue and toad
How you could have it all, one by one they did goad
But as you listened to them deeply enthralled
They did not even tell you at all!
What's waiting when you fall
From your king and from the heaven's starry fires
You concealed your deepest and blackest desire
Until a dagger led you through the night cold and dire
And as you summoned up your milkless gall
You heard a raven's screeching call
What's waiting when you fall!
Your confidante was the first to suspect you of the crime
From that moment he was living on borrowed time
But from his lifeless corpse a ghost did sublime
And as you had your feast in the hall
It appeared before you right through the wall!
What's waiting when you fall
Your Lady sleepwalked nightly from the royal quilt
Yes she had backed your ambition right to the hilt
From her unconscious hands she tried to wash the bloody guilt
But as she scrubbed a realisation appalled
It does not ever come off at all!

And as the forest to your castle crawled
Not even your stone walls could stall
