Sung in the play by the character Wendy.

In this scene Wendy has felt outcast from the rest of the world and sings in dismay with a feeling of reprisal to those she feels ostracised by. The cause of the fire at Seacliff was never established and this playwright puts a teaser that maybe there was someone with arsonist tendancies. The, Gothic, Seacliff Lunatic Asylum, as it was oficially referred to, was built on a sliding hillside and in reality it was suspected the building moved causing an electrical event.

WENDY (To herself)
Who does she think she is… she steals Willem from Te Paia and then she steals Te Paia from me? She’ll be stealing me next… stealing me from my sanity. I’m going to put an end to this; I’m going to show Grace Sutton just how dangerous I can be!

BEAT.

WENDY [Shouting]
I’ll show all of them!

(She walks over to the old piano and hits the keys angrily.)

(She stares at the instrument, breathing raggedly and then slowly sits down at it and begins to play.)

CUE MUSIC: “PLAYING WITH FIRE”

WENDY
Don’t you know you’re playing with fire?
Leaving me alone with my own thoughts
All I have are my desires
They’re all I’ve earned
Across the course of my life

Playing with fire
Playing with fire
Playing with fire

Calling out to preach my sin
The only one that answers back
Is my own echo
Don’t know where the day begins
I have no future I cannot
Let go of my past
And I still remember the blast
Of playing with fire

Playing with fire
Playing with fire
Playing with fire

A life wasted
No one speaks of
Case closed
Nothing left to be done
No one cares for what I’ve seen
And all that’s left to do is dream

[Instrumental]

(Wendy stands.)

WENDY
Don’t you know you’re playing with fire?
Leaving me alone with my own thoughts
Running on a very thin wire
You know very well
All I’ve ever been taught

Is playing with fire
Playing with fire
Playing with fire

[END SONG]

(Wendy walks backwards off stage as the song concludes.)
