Jariya is a trio of international female multi-instrumentalists/video artists whose innovative approach to song writing and performing (the three members of Jariya play a total of fifteen instruments) draws comparisons to the likes of Radiohead, Pink Floyd and PJ Harvey.
Marika Tjelios, Andrea Bensmiller and Eve Buigues met in Boston while attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Initially trained as vocalists and bassist, yet well acquainted with guitar, keyboards, drums and programming, they shared a common frustration toward contrived band performances and formulated rock/pop arrangements. Their new album, the Prejudice of a Certain Personality Type, (titled after Alan Watts’ quintessential lecture “Seeing Through The Net: Wiggly World”) takes the listener on a 60-minute introspective journey.
Without losing track of a fundamental commercial appeal, The Prejudice of a Certain Personality Type (recorded at the legendary Jim Henson’s Studios in Hollywood) intermingles organic and electronic instruments in an innovative blend of rock/electronic, fusing thought-provoking lyrics and haunting melodies. An occasional French lyric or rap also find their way into the soundscape.
Jariya is currently producing their multi-media show which opened at the McCadden Theater in Hollywood on March 3rd 2006. All subsequent performances have been sold-out. Their web page has been viewed by over 5000 people since the opening of the show.
Jariya have been featured in Girlfriends magazine, LN, Rock City News, and LA Times Online, “What’s Hot in LA”. Their music can be heard in features, shorts and TV shows, including Margaret Cho’s “Notorious C.H.O”, Margaret Cho's new feature film ""Bam Bam and Celeste"", Lorene Machado's ""Starcrossed"", the AOL/Launch promotion for Jack Black’s “School of Rock”, The Discovery Health Channel’s “Impact: Stories of Survival”, among others.
