Mrs. Cowley (http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/dese...)?, taught me my first repertoire and I used to practice on my Mother's Hamilton Upright. My mother bought me an acoustic guitar and sent me to lessons from Tom Baron (http://www.utahsymphony.org/the-orche...). Soon, I had a noisy Fender Bandmaster from Jack's Drum and Guitar Shop in Salt Lake City. I went to East High School in '72-'75 and their mascot is the Leopards. They easily could be the Deaf Leppards because of the loud noise I made.

One of my friends in Junior High and High School was in the Kennedy Family. His name was Kevin and I remember helping him repair a Kawasaki 120 motorcycle at my house located at 991 South 12th East in Salt Lake City. Kevin introduced me to his brother John and he sold me a go cart. It was 2 1/2 horse and he said he had a supercharger to go with it. When I heard Bruce Springsteen sing about, ""go-cart Mozart"" I was sure he was wise to me. I was pulled over for riding my Super Rat (Magic Rat or modified SL70 Honda) on the street by a Salt Lake Police Officer that must have known Bruce.

As soon as Kevin and I got the Kawasaki running we took it riding to Billy Harris' house (probably Billy of BILLY'S GOT A GUN by Def Leppard). Billy had a six gun he used to take to parties in High School and he turned me on to fuzz boxes. He had a friend, Larry Hansen, that played through a Marshall full stack and he showed me how to use the electric guitar for a solo instrument.

A couple of years after High School, I met Steven R. Urie. This was the first opportunity I had to play with another musician. In grade school I attempted to join the music department but, they declined to give me lessons on a Clarinet. Mr. Urie said he was an accomplished ski racer from Colorado and he had a brother, Clark Urie, that said he was a Marine and used to play guitar like Jimi Hendrix. Steve familiarized me with his drums and introduced me to Jeff Pittsinger - a bassist, and a guitarist named Brad.

Jeff, Brad and I did quite a bit of practicing together and did not split up until I went to Utah State University - which was located quite far from where I was used to living in Salt Lake City.
