The Michigan hard rock band SXX formed in the summer of 1999 under the name Bad Oscar. The core lineup and songwriting team consisted of Richard Nuyen (lead vocals), Shawn Rainer (drums), and Phil Wiswell (guitar). The band began writing songs for their first CD shortly after bassist JK joined the band. The new CD was recorded by the end of the year and the band began booking gigs in the southern Michigan area.

By 2003 the band had racked up numerous gigs all over the state including rock clubs, summer festivals, and theater dates. They had also recorded a third album and contributed a cover tune for the Robert Plant tribute album "Plant Waves". By that summer JK left the band and they continued on for a few gigs with a stand-in bass player. Later that year the remaining members renamed the band SXX based on an artwork idea that Richard and Phil had been working on. Richard soon took on bass guitar duties and the band continued on as a three piece.

In early 2004 SXX joined two popular Michigan bands, SonaKofa and Gabriel Burns for the Triple Threat concert series. The bands developed a close friendship and challenged each other to perform their absolute best at every gig. The intense work ethic made for a friendly competition where the fans won every night. The tour wrapped up that August when all three bands simultaneously released new albums at Sturgis Auditorium.

SXX continued through 2006 supporting their CD "Big Tips And Hats" playing just about everywhere and anywhere including the first annual Cereal City Cycle Fest and opening for the hard rock band Jackyl. At this time Phil went on a hiatus from the band and worked on projects at home.

After several shows in 2007 with guitarist Jeff Weers, SXX retreated to a recording studio to begin work on their fifth album with co-producer Thomas Bishop. Phil has since come back as an active member of the band as they complete tracks for their upcoming album titled "The Downplayer".
