Behind the name ‘The Blank Slates’, lies the concept of an ever changing sound, where each song has space to develop into its own without allowing the band itself to be easily categorized. Using the image of an actual blank slate shows how their creative abilities are used to produce music that is capable of being ever changing and varying. Combining different genres together by using different instruments, such as keyboard, violin, and harmonica, yet still remaining within Indie Rock, allows the band to reach alternative fan-bases.
The Blank Slates came to fruition two years ago when Andrea Iacopini moved to San Francisco, California by way of Bologna, Italy. The Blank Slates started as a solo project to develop an album built by choosing from a library of songs and new music that Andrea had been working on for the past four years. In May 2007 after meeting Adam Shaening-Pokrasso at the SoundArts Studio in San Francisco, recording of a 4-song EP began. After six months of recording, what was a 4-song EP started turning into a full length album.
In January 2008, Andrea met drummer Cochrane McMillan at Pyramind Institute in San Francisco. They started working together to be able to play live shows. Later in January, during a Test Press event at Pyramind, Andrea met bassist Martin Fowler. After a short time together, The Blank Slates was finally a full band and played their first live show the same month at The Knockout in San Francisco. The band is currently working on recording the full length album that spawned the demo ‘The Next Day’.
The Blank Slates have been a local band feature on Pirate Cat Radio 87.9fm, a San Francisco radio station where they had the opportunity to interview and debut their demo. Their most recent show was chosen by Palestra.net to be featured on their daily ‘Gig Guide’. While looking for a label to produce the album, they are writing new material and playing live shows around San Francisco and planning to tour in the near future.
