What if The Beatles had Morrissey as their singer-lyricist? Or if Elliott Smith had The Beach Boys as his backing band? Chances are, they would sound a lot like The Tonics!
Their first EP, Pop Go The Tonics, contains five songs that demonstrate their ability to communicate the hopes, uncertainties and fears of the 21st-century generation while retaining the clarity and pop sensibility of 60s groups. Distance, but for its strange and unsettling lyrics, could've been lifted from the oldies radio. Sad is a dreamlike, contemplative song showing a kind of maturity far ahead of their age. Lucy and Lucy Tricked Me Into Something show their ability to develop a single theme across multiple songs - a characteristic that comes mostly from their honest, personal and thoughtful style of songwriting. Thank You is an appropriate EP closer, showcasing the lighter side of the band, as well as bringing things back down to earth with a literal, and gracious, thank-you to the listener.
