It was the summer of 2005, and they were familiar strangers in a basement playing to a busy street. Thrashing ensued. Three became four. Layers developed in the way they do organically and rhythm was the fruit grown. Four became five. Practices on Thursdays now became ritual. Songs are being sung with gusto. Confidence is something you can't pretend. The bass danced with the violin and mandolin. Songs about politics, spirituality, relationships, confusion, clarity, and birds took shape. Then the five became one, and the sound was rising into the streets. The police were called by the neighbors. The next morning they all waved with neighborly friendliness. A name change is made to defy all band names. So here they are, Five Defy as always. Raw energy, beautiful layers, eccentric impulses.
