Icelandic born Gis (pronounced geese) grew up in a family with a strong musical background. Growing up, Gis's musical direction was shaped by his father, a music teacher and a well-known, country-folk singer in Iceland.
Finding his way in various musical directions, Gis realized that his true passion was writing and singing country music. His father's roots and his mother’s passion for Merle finally caught up with him. “For the longest time I didn’t know country would be what I’m the most passionate about. It represents everything to me, the love for my family and the sound I’ve naturally found", Gis adds.
In 2000 he founded the band “Big City” which tours with him still today. Gis Johansson & Big City regularly appear at some of the most respected country music venues on the West Coast as well touring his native Iceland.
Gis Johansson’s debut album “Bring Me You” was released in August of 2002. It immediately gained distribution through the Sonet Corporation based in Iceland. His second CD “Native Son, released in July 2004 is currently distributed through www.TowerRecords.com and the Sonet Corporation.
Gis has been featured on radio stations such as Victorville’s CAT Country 100.7 (CA) Sunny Country 102.5 (CA) KraZy Country 105.9 (CA) and KWNR 95.5 (NV) as well as on numerous TV and radio stations in Iceland. Gis has appeared with artists such as Hal Ketchum, Phil Vassar and Lonestar.
