In todays oversaturated music industry the phrase super producer gets thrown around a lot, most incorrectly using the word super as a prefix and not an adjective. Mistakenly, any beat maker whom possesses the talent to create one or two hit records and three or four more album fillers feel that they can be placed among the elite. But very few know that becoming a great composer especially in the hip hop genre is evolving from a beat maker to a producer and knowing the difference. Furthermore, acknowledging that only the proven elite producers are “worthy” of the “super”. This is something that producer/engineer Luvchil aka Zip believes wholeheartedly and has begun the maturation process to one day be considered to be amongst the elite. Zip, born Dennis Bell on March 16, 1986 in Newark, New Jersey, moved to Atlanta in 1995 and started producing and disc jockeying in around 2001 and he has been working on his craft ever since. Zip believes that what separates an elite producer from the rest of the bunch is the formulation of a innovative sound pushing the limits on what is heard throughout the instrumental of a song, producing hit records and expanding the careers of artists consistently over a duration of time. Furthermore, Zip is developing a style that could reach far beyond the range of the typical hip hop producer. Zip’s sound could be considered a cross between many genres of music because his base philosophy in composing music is to never let genre, current music fads or anything else predetermined hinder his scope when making a beat. A Zip beat is always going to contain a distinctive baseline, 808 kicks and strings even. But a variety of so many other instruments and effects are used and zip beats to create the desired sound and feel for a track. From synths, live instruments, sampled vocals and sounds to unorthodox instrumentation. He is just as comfortable flipping a hip hop beat into rock or techno and vice versa. Zip’s sound simply cannot be placed in a box. “If you want the ordinary, don’t call Zip.” He is influenced by producers such as Teddy Riley, Dr. Dre, Timbaland, and Rodney Jerkins. “Timbaland is one of the people I’ve been influenced by because he showed me its ok to be different to experiment and think outside the box.” Says Zip, “And Teddy Riley because he influenced any and every major producer that’s making moves on the east coast, from Diddy , the Neptunes, Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Rodney Jerkins. He paved the way for a lot of what we hear on the radio today.” Zip has already worked with a number of stars and up-incomers alike such as Hurricane Chris,R&B girl group Taurus, Archie Eversole, Mike Fresh, and J Bless to name a few. He is currently looking to break into the independent mixtape scene and continue to work on commercial album releases. But bigger goals lie ahead for the Art Institute of Atlanta attendee, “In the near future I hope to land a publishing deal and begin to start producing my personal artist on a larger scale.” “I’m looking to help take hip hop music to the next level.” And to the next level is where Mr. Bell seems poised to go, to one day earn the adjective that has been made into a prefix
