Based in Oakland, Drop Black Sky has been performing in San Francisco clubs since 2003. The band uses a broad spectrum of sounds and instrumentation including effects laden guitars, heavy bass, self-crafted samples, field recordings, digital programming, piano, and er hu (Chinese violin). They interweave deeply textured harmonies and rhythms with powerful and evocative vocals.
Drop Black Sky's sound lies somewhere within the realm of Dead Can Dance, Boards of Canada, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, and Tool.
The music has drawn the attention of independent filmmakers, and the band also provided an original score for a Chinese herb television show.
Drop Black Sky just participated in the "Arts From Our Land" competition highlighting non-Chinese artists performing chinese-related art. Drop Black Sky's performance of the classic Chinese song Kangding Qing Ge will air on Beijing television in 2006.
