Eric and Madge are both versatile multi-instrumentalists and their live act is able to span a mixture of styles, ranging across rock, folk and country, and including a large collection of traditional Scottish, Irish and American songs and tunes, as well as catchy original titles such as; 'Of Course I Love You' and 'Someone Dances'.
Eric and Madge first met in London in the nineties while playing in separate bands. From time to time they would get together in various live band line-ups and for occasional recording projects, eventually forming a full-time duo in 2004. They quickly found themselves in popular demand at venues in and around London. Eric has built a studio in which they create and record music, and they have been commissioned to produce, arrange, perform & record soundtracks for film and theatre projects.
Magic Minds are technically equipped to play in small venues or on big stages such as open-air festivals, etc. They don't use any backing tracks as they believe live music should really be live.
Madge grew up in Edinburgh in a musical family. Her father was a long standing member of the Edinburgh Bach Choir and her paternal grandmother and her sister were both soloists in the famous Glasgow Orpheus Choir. Her paternal great-grandfather was a church organist and choirmaster, and her maternal grandmother played the organ in the local church, and also the banjo. Madge began classical piano and music theory training aged five, shortly followed by classical training on other instruments, as well as inclusion in a specialist children's choral group. At the age of fifteen she joined a local rock/pop covers band, and was just sixteen when their first ever professional gig took place in Edinburgh Castle.
She has extremely wide experience both as a solo performer and in a variety of rock and pop cover and original music bands and folk groups, even managing to fit in time to work as a music promoter and venue manager in central London and at the Edinburgh festival. Some of her recordings and live performances have been broadcast on radio and tv, and from time to time her abilities as a professional lead and backing vocal session singer have been sought out for studio or live work, mainly through personal contacts and recommendations.
Eric started off learning guitar as a teenager, moving on to bass guitar before finally settling on the drums as his instrument of choice. He also spent time learning to play the Indian Sitar, although he does not use it in the live act at the moment.
His first ever professional assignment at the age of twenty one was recording the drums for the Munich Ballet in the studio of the Nationaltheater Muenchen. From then on he pursued playing drums and has since worked live and in the studio for many known and unknown bands, singers and songwriters.
When playing in the duo formation Eric uses either an electronic drum kit or an acoustic drum kit specially made by Eddie Ryan. When using the electric kit Eric can trigger bass drum and snare with his feet in order to have the hands free to play another instrument, therefore creating a fuller sound.
