JAY
Jay Thompson started playing guitar and singing when he started high school at age fourteen. Jay played in an electric jazz quintet with other competent young musicians from the small town of Naugatuck, CT where they lived.
In 1994, Jay started his first semester at the University of New Haven, New Haven CT where he studied jazz performance and arranging for four years. In 1998 Jay received his degree in Music and Sound Recording.
After college Jay played and recorded with several local artists. It wasn't long until Jay realized his love of traveling and performing in front of audiences. The first band he played in was a 50’s tribute band called the “Atomic Fireballs”, Where Jay played guitar and sang lead vocals. Touring New England, Casino tri-state area for three years, playing hundreds of venues.
Besides playing in New England, Jay went with the “Atomic Fireballs” to cruise ships and realized that it was an atmosphere that he enjoyed working in. "It was a lot of fun playing in the “Atomic Fireballs” but I knew I wanted to start my own band. I was singing more and more and needed that outlet. I was getting less satisfaction in just playing guitar and knew it was time to branch out."
Jay finished a contract on a ship in 2006, just before Christmas. Over the Christmas holidays, he started compiling music and started learning songs for his new project. Finding musicians was the difficult part but he soon found the right players and had a very solid band together. The name Instaband seemed appropriate and obvious and the stage was set.
"Not many people know this" admits Jay "but Instaband’s first performance was at a Union Street Station Benefit. It was the first time we played in front of an audience! I knew we were sounding really good because we rehearsed a lot but it wasn't until that first performance that everything came together."
The momentum from that first show has snowballed and is still growing. Instaband fills out their venues nightly. The band is very solid and the harmonies, solos and song selections are strong. Instaband play several hundred songs and have a great and contagious energy about them. Looking back, Jay smiles "I have the greatest job in the world and one of the best bands on ships!"
JD
JD grew up in New York City and moved to CT at age fourteen. This is also the time that JD began to play bass and really get into music.
It wasn't long until he was playing in local bands around New England.
His music brought him to western Canada where he continued to improve his playing through different venues in Vancouver and across British Columbia and Alberta.
His life of travel continued as JD accepted contracts on cruise ships where he worked on and off for a few years before joining Instaband in 2006.
JD is a powerhouse onstage and sonically owns a lot of Instaband real estate. His technical mastery of the fingerboard and impeccable tone have gained him his own section of fans nightly and he can be found fielding questions from bass enthusiasts after performances. "JD is definitely not an average bassist" compliments bandleader, Jay Thompson "I've played with so many guys and JD is definitely the best. The tone, the feel, the stage presence...his love of music comes through in every note. You've got to hear this guy!"
Marc Szwaba is our Keyboardist/Lead guitarist. Marc lives in a small New England City when not working with Instaband.
Marc plays with great feel and authority and always brings a great attitude and energy to the music. This projects well to both guests and band mates alike.
Marc has played piano and guitar over 20 years and has been a band bandleader to several bands. He was the founder of Nolan Brother’s Music in Connecticut.
Marc has played all over the New England and has had a regular gig at the legendary Boru’s Cafe made famous by Duke Ellington.
