Between 2002 and 2006, Dutch dreampop ensemble Mist received wide international acclaim with their sensitive, melancholic and poppy albums ‘We Should Have Been Stars’ and ‘Bye Bye’. Mist mesmerized audiences in Spain, France, Germany, Norway, Chili, Argentina, Mexico, and in homebase The Netherlands.
In the autumn of 2006, Mist started with periodically releasing songs in mp3-format on its website, under the name Mist:Period. This project lasted a year and gathered many new Mist-believers all over the world - thousands of mp3s were downloaded each month.

Still, Mist-fans started asking for a real cd. And people lost their mp3s... And others wanted to have a tangible document in their hands. Although Mist operates on a smaller scale than a band like Radiohead, the idea is the same: Internet is a great way to distribute music, but fans want to have the real thing in the end.

So, having listened carefully to all these wishes, Mist decided to finally release these songs on an ‘old-fashioned cd’. Adding three brand new tracks: ‘Endless Refrains’, ‘Away from Hurt’ and ‘Stay on the Road’. All twelve songs are remixed and remastered for this album. Some songs of the Internet project Mist:Period are left out, but will remain available on the Mist-website.

During the hectic process of writing, recording, mixing and mastering a song each month, changes in the band started taking place. Drummer Jaimy Quite called it quits, because he got tired of competing with Rick’s home-made electronic beats. Arthur ten Cate started a succesful solo career as Arthur Adam and bassplayer Bart van Kuijk joined Arthur and Jaimy’s rockband The New. Mist-founders Ivar Vermeulen and Rick Treffers have now recruited a new bunch of great Dutch musicians to join them on stage, a.o. drummer Rob Kloet, from the notorious Dutch band Nits.

‘Period’ contains bright, catchy, adventurous and clever dream pop, layered with electronic beats, female vocalists, and unexpected rock and dance influences. Musical references: The Notwist, The Divine Comedy, Damon Albarn, The Innocence Mission, Tunng and Loney, dear.

Sleeve note:

In 2005, we made Bye Bye, an almost conceptual, very balanced and structured
album. With regard to the new songs emerging in 2006, we felt the need to try an entirely different approach. So, for a full season we recorded a brand new song each month, and made it freely available on mist-music.com until an even newer song was finished. We called this twelve-step online album Mist:Period. It was an adventurous, musically inspiring, and sometimes nerve wrecking experience. In some cases I engineered the songs on my laptop at home. In other cases the band process of arranging was too slow to meet our self-imposed, ruthless deadlines. And sometimes everyone just seemed to hit the right chords from the very start. In the end, Mist:Period resulted in twelve diverse, pressure-cooked Mist songs. And now you hold the fruits of Mist:Period in your hand, on old-fashioned compact disc. We have added a few new songs and left out the Mist:Period originals Cruising, Christmas Day and The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore, although you can still download them at mist-music.com. Have a good trip!
