The Weakerthans are a four-piece (and sometimes six piece) independent rock band founded in 1997, near the geographical centre of North America, in Winnipeg, Canada.
Sonically located in the finest tradition of Punk, The Weakerthans walk an archipelago of influences from rock to folk to alt-country and beyond, led by lyrics tutored in the best of contemporary literature and progressive politics.
Their third full-length recording, Reconstruction Site (Epitaph, 2003), mixed by Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age) and produced by the legendary Ian Blurton, is their most musically cohesive and lyrically ambitious effort to date. Reconstruction Site follows the success of Left and Leaving (G-7/Sub-City, 2000), and Fallow (G-7/Sub-City, 1997)--records that garnered appreciation and acclaim from listeners around the world.
Currently divided between Toronto (Jason Tait--Drums, Percussion, Vibraphone, Keyboards) and Winnipeg (Stephen Carroll--Guitar, Pedal and Lap Steel, Keyboards, John K. Samson--Lead Vocals, Guitar), The Weakerthans expand the band for the live show, enlisting help from Toronto musician, Greg Smith--Bass, and sometimes for extra special good times, musicians Dave MacKinnon--Keyboards, and Brian Poirier--Acoustic guitar and Backing vocals.
The Weakerthans tour everywhere, and often hope to see you soon.
