S(H)e is a collaboration forged among some of Philadelphia’s most in-demand performers. Outside of S(H)e, these five artists have performed with the likes of the Roots, Destiny’s Child, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, the Violent Femmes, and much more. But it is the unique style of S(H)e that each of them has been focusing on lately, and that style has started to earn some well-deserved attention.

Shortly after forming and signing to Big Barn Records (www.bigbarnrecords.com), the band entered the studio to begin work on its debut, Animal. The album showcases a style that is almost beyond comparison. The band describes its sound as “pure Philly,” citing a long list of influences that includes Jimi Hendrix, P-Funk, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Prince, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Phish, Biggie, Whitney, Jay-Z, Outkast, Michael Jackson, Pink, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jeff Buckley, and much more. That’s quite a list, but once you hear S(H)e’s sound, it will all make perfect sense.

“We have used this to our advantage to cross as many genres as possible,” says bassist Tom Laskas. “We have played rock shows, and we have played pure hip-hop and R&B shows. Our music has clicked in both scenes. We have just as many fans in the hip-hop world as we do in the rock world. We are rock, pop, hip-hop, and everything in between.”
