Cliff Hedley has recently released his debut album, ""Sink & Swim"". The album is a self-funded effort on Hedley's own indie label, Sonic Orange.
The ball started rolling on ""Sink & Swim"" with an NZ On Air grant for Cliff's first single ""Overcoat"" which brought him back to New Zealand after a stint in the UK travelling and playing gigs as a solo artist. Cliff followed that up with a video, before work began in earnest on recording the remaining album tracks between 2005-2006.
The songs started to take their shape with the formation of the ""Cliff Hedley Band"" around 2004 - including Brent Martin on drums, AJ Hay on keys/backing vocals and Andre Birt on guitar. This helped transform them from acoustic singer-songwriter tracks into edgier rock numbers - a closer resemblance to the kind of music that influenced Cliff's song-writing. Further evolution happened under the guidance of producer Andrew Buckton at Studio 203, with the help of some talented local musicians in Jay Foulkes, Stephen Small, Janek Croydon, Jordan Clark and Buckton himself adding bass and guitar.
A second NZ On Air grant was awarded in 2007 to produce the video for ""indecision"", the latest single from the album. The video has appeared on Alt TV and C4, and the single will be played on The Rock's ""Off the record"" show during April.
The album is available now from Real Groovy and Amplifier.co.nz.
