Ligeia's eclectic mix of psychedelic, melancholic, visionary and ecstatic sounds rapidly won over a wide audience when he first began releasing material in 2000. Songs like the goth-folk ballad 'Drifting' and technicolour rocker 'Before You' reached the highest echelons of BeSonic.com's charts, and conjured up some rather interesting reactions.
One reviewer, for example, interpreted Drifting as a 'remarkable indictment of the state of enthralment that actually has nothing to do with the female sex, but everything to do with the self-absorbed narcissism of the observer"" (Childe Roland/Aeon Publications 2004). All the more remarkable given that Ligeia (pronounced 'lye-gee-ah') himself thought it was about a crush.
An accomplished singer, songwriter, electric, acoustic and bass guitarist, programmer and enthusiastic blower of his own trumpet, Ligeia (a.k.a. Simon Freedman) spent the first 18 years of his life on Malta the sun-drenched pebble of iniquity, before moving to England to study philosophy and revolutionise the landscape of popular music in no particular order.
His new release 'Visions Eternal', by turns introspective and aggressive, lovesick and hedonistic, was recorded at various studios across the South East of England and pre- and post-produced in his home studio. A must-have for any lover of electrifying songwriting and lyrical poetry, it is now available to buy through CD Baby (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/ligeia).
