The Roadside Prophets have been making music as a a group for more than a decade. Todd started the band after seeing the film ""The Roadside Prophets"" with John Doe of 'X' fame. The idea of being of the 'Roadside' and yet having a sense of having something Prophetic to convey perfectly suited the band's sound. The music created is Rural Rock of a type heard in every juke joint since the beginning of time. Simple, pure, beautiful, rough, and jangly. The lyrics, however, are written by literature and philosophy students Todd and Stephanie, giving them a depth and weight not expected as acompanyment for songs that echo familiarity and ease. Stephanie, along with Todd grew up listening to 10,000 Maniacs, R.E.M., U2, Peter Gabriel, The Sundays, The Violent Femmes, Sinead O'Connor, The Smiths, The Cure, and others who gave birth to what became 'alternative' music a decade later. Todd and Stephanie have been joined in the band by a number of fellow musicians. Before these folks joined, however, Todd and Stephanie toured the country in a 1976 Dodge van. They played folk festivals, bars, listening halls, and Street Corners across the country, forming the union that has lasted more than 10 years. The sound of the band has evolved, but continues to be based in Folk and Punk, bringing simplicity and passion together in a unique but traditional sound. In mid-2001 the Prophets moved to Los Angles to become Rock Stars, only to discover that they are, as they have always been, Folk Singers with Rock and Roll swagger and Punk Rock hands. The current album is entitled 'Perfect' for far too complex a group of reasons to begin to discuss here (quite frankly i have trouble understanding it myself even after the hours Todd rambles on about the Nature of Man etc.) but can be understood in a single listening. The music is primarily acoustic with mandolin, xylophone, congas, touches of bright electric guitars, and the Vocal tapestry that make this band what they are : A Joy and a Pleasure to behold.
