Wandering the Westerlies
A song story by Mark S. HolmanHe was born where the dogwoods bloom in Carolina, soft white petals drifting on a gentle spring breeze. But the wind never let him stay still for long. Ohio gave him thunder in the blood. Pennsylvania gave him wide open room to roam. A South Carolina summer left salt on his skin and sand in his shoes. Then Germany wrapped a bigger hand around him in the cold of winter, teaching him that the world was larger than any map could hold. One day the fence line shook and the milkweed pods jumped ship, sailing off on the same wind that had always called his name. It took him right back to that first road trip — windows down, no destination, just the road and the sky. Mama used to say wandering was just another word for losing your way. He smiled and told her the truth: losing your way was how he finally found it.So he folded the map. Then he threw it in the back seat. He’s been wandering the westerlies ever since. Blue going on for days. No due north. No bills waiting. Just a kid (and later a man with silver hair) and the wind at play. Rhine to Yadkin, Yadkin to the sea. Myrtle Beach to Munich and back again. When his granddaughter asks, “Papa, where you at?” he laughs and answers, “Somewhere between gone and coming back.”The Roaring Forties tried to hold him down. The Furious Fifties tried to turn him around. The Screaming Sixties told him he was through. He just grinned into the gale and said, “I’m just getting started — how about you?”Now he’s back on the same old Carolina porch under the same old pine. The same wind that met him at birth still cuts right through time. People ask if he’s done wandering yet. He looks at the horizon, feels that familiar itch in his soul, and knows the answer. If the songs will carry him and the wind still blows, he’ll keep going — Ohio to Tokyo, around the globe and home again. Carolina born, Carolina bound… but that west wind keeps whispering, “Go, go, go.”So he steps off the porch once
Wandering the Westerlies
Born in Carolina where the dogwoods bloom,
Ohio gave me thunder, Pennsylvania room,
South Carolina summer on the strand,
Germany winter with a bigger hand!
Fence line shaking, milkweed jumping ship,
Took me right back to that first road trip,
Mama said wandering is just losing your way,
I said Mama, losing is how I found my way!
Hold that map — FOLD that map —
Throw it in the back!
I'm WANDERING THE WESTERLEES! (Hey! Hey!)
Where the blue goes on for days! (Hey! Hey!)
No due north, no bills to pay,
Just a kid and the wind at play!
Rhine to Yadkin, Yadkin to the sea,
Myrtle Beach to Munich, back to me,
Granddaughter says "Papa, where you at?"
I said "somewhere between gone and coming back!"
WANDERING THE WESTERLIES! (Hey! Hey!)
Where the blue goes on for days! (Hey! Hey!)
Sun on my face, breeze in my soul,
Got that itch that won't let go!
Roaring Forties tried to hold me down,
Furious Fifties tried to turn me 'round,
Screaming Sixties said "boy, you're through!"
I said "I'm just getting started — how about you?"
Now I'm back in Carolina, same old porch, same old pine,
Same wind I was born in cutting right through time,
People ask "Mark, you done wandering yet?"
I got that WANDERING WESTERLEES ITCH in my soul and I ain't done yet!
If these songs will carry me, if that wind will still blow,
I'll circumvent this globe from Ohio to Tokyo,
Carolina born, Carolina bound,
But that west wind is still saying "go, go, go!"
WANDERING THE WESTERLIES! (Hey! Hey!)
Gonna let these songs take me all the way! (Hey! Hey!)
One more road, one more roll of the play,
With that wandering itch in my soul today!
WANDERING THE WESTERLIES!
Sun on my face, breeze in my soul —
Gonna circumvent this globe if my songs allow!
C'mon and get carried away!
C'mon and get carried away!
C'mon and get carried — WANDERING THE WESTERLIES!
Born here... leaving again...
