Fragile Things
by Will Pearson
Adapted by Kale Iverson
Late last night
I fashioned a pair
of paperclip rings
And at an all-night florists
Bought a bouquet
of tissue flowers
Fragile things, Fragile Things
The salesgirl smiled at me
across the counter
Her Tired green eyes
recognized My schemes
Her deft fingers
Folded blossoms
together
Plucking one aside
to plant behind
her ear
She was humming
(Chorus)
Birds know
That This is the way
Things begin
And This is the way Things end
(Reapeat once)
That’s when I left
Rings nestled close around the stems
Clutched in my hand
All the way to the
Number eleven bus
Off at your stop (Then I really stop the song and pause)
And to the front door
I vaulted the steps in a bound
To knock on varnished wood
Fragile things held
(Deleted Close) behind my back
All the while
I was Humming
Birds know
That This is the way
Things begin
And This is the way Things will end
(Reapeat once again)
