A song for Tiffany, who wanted me to help her students learn the Virginia Native American tribal language regions.

A - I – S
By Eric R. Chandler, M. Ed.

There were three main language groups in our home state
They belonged to the American Indians-to that there’s no debate
Look at a map of Virginia - see if you can see
Where they all lived, how many were there? 3!

Say A – I – S,
A – I – S,
A – I – S,
Know what it stands for? Yes!

“A” is for Algonquian, you’ll find it in the east
That’s where all the Powhatans sat down to feast
They’re all just hangin’ out - all along the coast
In the Tidewater region, the place they like the most!

Chorus

“I” s for Iroquoian, you’ll find them in the west,
in the southwest corner, that’s where they used to rest
Spoken by the Cherokee, hear it coming from their mouths?
You could also find them in a small pocket down in the south! (near Richmond!)

Chorus

“S” is for the Siouan, I bet you just can’t wait
to find out that they lived down the middle of the state
Spoken in the Piedmont region running north to south
Watcha doin’ all you Siouan, we’re just chillin in the middle, come on over, we’ll hang out!

Chorus

You’ve got Algonquian in the east
Iroquoian south and west
Siouan right down the middle of the state
Now you’re ready for that test, you’re the best!
