song about the loss of my childhood hometown to the needs of NY City.
Gary Teed
NY City destroyed the town of Cannonsville and surrounding communities in the early 60's. The town was completely gone by 1963. Towns lost were Cannonsville, Rock Royal, Granton, Rock Rift, and Beerston. Once a dairy center with highly prized dairy goods.
They came from NY city,
To the land where beauty lies.
And what they did to people here,
Would make a grown man cry
They wanted our water,
So they pushed us all aside.
They took away our livelyhood,
And the county slowly died.
(chorus)
Oh, Cannonsville I see you,
Through the teardrops in my eyes.
Though you lie beneath the waves now,
In my heart you'll never die.
I was just a boy of seven,
When we were forced from the land.
They came and took our home away.
I didn't understand.
And all of the farmers here,
Were dealt a heavy blow.
Fifty cents on the dollar was all they would give,
You couldn't tell them "no"!
(chorus)
Oh, Cannonsville I see you,
Through the teardrops in my eyes.
Though you lie beneath the waves now,
In my heart you'll never die.
(bridge)
Oh, to walk your dusty roads once again,
On a warm summer's day without end.
To stroll on grandpa's farm,
And enjoy that country charm,
Or to drop a fishing line at the river's bend.
I hope I never see this again,
Please don't put me through that pain.
They even have a word for it.
They call it emmenent domain.
And for those who cannot see,
Why I feel so for this land.
Let me show you all the beauty there is to see.
Maybe then you'll understand.
(chorus)
Oh, Cannonsville I see you,
Through the teardrops in my eyes.
Though you lie beneath the waves now,
In my heart you'll never die.
Oh, Cannonsville I see you,
Through the teardrops in my eyes.
Though you lie beneath the waves now,
In my heart you're still alive!
