A jazzy late-night kind of song.
Written, performed, and recorded by Tom O'Brien

I often write songs late at night, and one night I wrote this song about writing a song. Shouldn't poetry be the essence of all our days?
|
Why does poetry come so late at night
When it should be the essence of my day?
When it's late I free associate
But I'm much too tired to ever make it stay
But I begin to sing
Whatever words the late night brings
Get my guitar and play
Whatever chords get in the way
Then in a while you stop
And recognize the moment
I don't know if I've been hypnotized
But a late night love of coffee can't explain
How the notes tend to prioritize
And the words just rattle on to a refrain
Then, in the gloom of two
Some kind of light comes shining through
Putting the spell on you
Knowing exactly what to do
Then in a while you stop
And recognize the moment
Why does poetry come so late at night
when it should be the essence of my day?
