Metaphorical relationship song - sometimes you don't know who's at the wheel, and who's in tow. I've driven Highway Five down the middle of California many times alone at night from San Francisco to San Diego. It's a long, monotonous stretch. Much of this song was dictated into a little hand-held recorder while on a midnight drive.

Like parasites
We intertwine
But who's the tree
And who's the vine?
When tangled limbs
Above us vie
Then one of us
Is bound to die
We both are washed
Down in the flood
But who's the rain
And who's the mud?
While one ascends
To fill the sky
The other's parched,
Alone, and dry
With you and me
It's hard to know
Who's at the wheel
And who's in tow
No matter where
We try and drive
It's straight, and night
Down Highway Five
